Hello everyone,

I am slowly approaching the decision regarding exterior window sills.

What are your experiences with aluminum, plastic (uPVC), or granite?
Rough or smooth surface?
What should I budget per m² (square meter)?

The location is western Münsterland, which I assume also plays a role in pricing.

Regarding the appearance: All our windows and doors are in RAL 7016, and we have very dark red glazed roof tiles. The house has a standard roof overhang and a dark red brick façade with some dark gray stones mixed in.

If desired, I can gladly upload pictures of the house.

Thank you all for your help!

I suspected as much. But I can’t upload a picture via phone because the files are simply too large.
I’ll take care of it tomorrow.

Granite is definitely the best option. In our old house, we have aluminum window sills, and the rain makes quite a loud noise on them. They also don’t match well with brick cladding. A drip edge layer would be better in that case. We have the same window color and red brick veneers, and our window sills are black granite Nero Assoluto with a brushed finish. The matte surface is somehow easier to maintain.

If I had a brick veneer facade, my window sills would be a masonry sloped drip edge (make sure to consider the slope)!

I regret every time it rains a little harder that we didn’t invest “the few euros” in granite window sills.

Never aluminum window sills again.

We have aluminum window sills, and there has already been heavy rain. So far, everything seems fine to me. It is possible that mistakes can be made in the details (installation of the window sills), I might also be hard of hearing, or it could matter that the patio doors on the weather-exposed side have no window sills (the terrace extends right up to the door with a drain in front of it).

@RFR You must also have triple-glazed windows, right?

Yes, we have triple glazing. The rain noise isn't that bad, but compared to the neighboring house with granite window sills, it is noticeably louder.

Also: Our bed is placed directly under the window on the weather-facing side. Sometimes it can be quite annoying.

For us, the extra cost would have been 300 to 400 euros for the 16 windows. It bothers me that I didn’t invest in that.
