ᐅ Should interior window sills be installed before or after the interior plaster?

We would like to have interior window sills made of natural stone installed. Normally, window sills are measured after the windows are installed and then fitted before the interior plastering is done.

Unfortunately, the window sills have a very long delivery time, but the date for the interior plastering cannot be postponed.

I am hesitant to measure the window sills before the windows are in because I think there is too much that could go wrong.

What is the difference if I install the window sills after the interior plastering is already done? Is that possible? I have read that the appearance is different—can someone explain this to me?

My question is, if you plaster first and then install the window sills, what would look different on the window sills?

Actually, nothing. However, having the plasterer finish last is the more practical sequence, mainly because of touch-ups. If the plasterer skips the affected corners and only finishes after the window sill installer, it ends up being a patchwork job. Plaster should be plaster, not plaster over most surfaces but filler around the edges.

Measuring window sills before the windows are installed is nonsense, right?

Even more so. But it would also be silly if the plasterer came before and only placed the window sills roughly: they are not exactly "slid" into place but set in a bed, so there needs to be some allowance for installation. You don’t want to fill or patch the gaps later with a sealant or filler. So, in my view, a clean finish only happens if the sequence is right.

You also don’t install the floor slab just because the bricklayer is available earlier.

So it’s just too complicated to do the finishing work later, so that’s why they install them beforehand....

Yes, that’s right. Once everything is plastered and then the person installing the window sills arrives, it’s the first time they complain about having to chip away plaster on both sides. With maybe 20 windows in a new build, that’s not only frustrating but also time-consuming, which will likely be reflected somewhere in the final cost.

Then the plasterers have to return to plaster around the 20 window sills, which again takes considerable time and money.

Theoretically, it’s possible. The window openings are already built. You just need to know the thickness of the window frame profile and how far from the exterior wall or interior wall the windows will be installed. This can vary depending on the method used. If you know all the measurements and how far the window sill should extend into the room, you can calculate the correct size. But even so, it’s complicated, time-consuming, and generally not advisable...

Best regards

The result will look like a renovation job, with lots of silicone sealant and similar fixes. So applying plaster up to windows that aren’t installed yet is something I would advise against (speaking as a seasoned former window manufacturer).

Exactly. That’s why my concluding sentence was: complicated, time-consuming, not recommended...
