ᐅ Why does my Billy bookshelf wobble on an uneven floor?

I have a Billy bookcase from Ikea that I placed on my hardwood floor, which unfortunately is not completely flat. My problem is that the bookcase constantly wobbles whenever I put something on it or touch it lightly. How can it be that the Billy bookcase feels so unstable on an apparently solid floor? I wonder if it’s due to the design of the bookcase or if there is a simple way to fix this issue without having to adjust the entire floor surface. Have others experienced something similar? What solutions do you recommend to minimize or prevent the wobbling?

The combination of lightweight furniture construction and the lack of proper support at all points inevitably leads to instability.\

In my view, this quote sums it up perfectly. I would add: if your Billy-style shelf wobbles, you should also check whether the shelves are already slightly warped or unevenly installed – this can further reduce stability.

I have had good experience fitting the feet with small plastic gliders that can be easily raised or lowered.

Additionally, a solid wall attachment helps. This is also a safety issue, especially if there are children in the house. It not only prevents wobbling but also tipping over under unexpected loads.

Therefore, I would recommend:
1. Check and improve the foot supports.
2. Inspect and reinforce the wall fixings.
3. Ensure the shelves are properly and evenly positioned.

With these steps, you should be able to solve the problem sustainably in most cases.
