Good morning everyone,

I have a question that has confused me with several Malm units from Ikea: Why do the screws included in the Malm package sometimes not fit?

Specifically, I mean that in some cases I cannot use the supplied screws because they are either too long or too short, or they don’t fit properly into the designated holes. However, this does not happen with all packages, only with some.

Does anyone know the reason for this? Could it be due to different production batches, faulty parts, or maybe some versions of the Malm units are simply not compatible?

I have already made sure that I have the correct screw pack, but the difference still exists. Is there a trick or a tip on what to keep in mind?

Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

The cause is usually that Malm models are sold with different sets of screws, which are not all compatible with each other.

It’s best to check if the instructions exactly match your model and are not intended for a different version.

Hello Vanessa,

you have described the problem very clearly, which is important for providing a precise answer. The Malm shelving unit actually comes in several versions that differ slightly in construction, even though they look very similar externally.

This means that although Ikea offers several products under the name 'Malm,' they have different assemblies and therefore require different fasteners.

If you have a used shelf, for example, with an instruction packet or screws from a different batch, the screws might not fit.

Another point is that some packages include spare screws that may not be intended for all assembly steps but rather for repairs. These can sometimes be identified by their slightly different length or shape.

If the instructions mention several options, check whether you are following the correct steps and if the screws match the parts listed there.

In general, it helps to carefully compare the parts and not simply use all screws in the designated places if they don’t fit.

I hope this helps clarify the issue somewhat!

Additionally, I would like to emphasize that Ikea often makes quality and design adjustments to shelving units to optimize production costs or simplify assembly.

As a result, dimensions and tolerances for screws and fittings may change slightly. These minor modifications can cause screws from older or newer packages to not be fully compatible.

My advice: If screws don’t fit, be sure to use the correct set and the most up-to-date assembly instructions. If you have combined parts from different sources, you are likely to encounter issues.

I think it’s important to critically consider whether the issue is really only with the screw kit. Sometimes slight dimensional variations in the prefabricated holes of the wooden parts themselves cause the problem, especially in mass production furniture manufacturing.

That’s a good point, but this is exactly where I see a weakness: such changes, if not clearly labeled, can confuse customers and are not communicated transparently.

Has anyone ever been informed by the manufacturer that there may be different screw sets for the same model year? Or are there official notices regarding transition phases?

I suspect that the lack of standardization contributes to this problem. In the end, customers are expected to figure it out themselves somehow. Perhaps a system change is needed here, with screws that are more universal or better labeled.
