Hello everyone,

I recently noticed that some doors, originally intended for IKEA Billy bookcases, no longer fit properly. The doors are sometimes crooked, get stuck when closing, or seem oddly too large or too small. I’m curious if anyone here has experience with why this might be.

Have the Billy bookcases perhaps undergone structural changes over the years? Or have there been adjustments made to the doors? I would assume that such a standardized product wouldn’t change much, but these issues are quite noticeable.

Could this also be related to material expansion, installation errors, or compatibility issues?

I look forward to a constructive discussion and helpful answers!

Best regards,
peterbla

IKEA has different generations of the Billy bookcases. The doors often only fit specific model versions. This is usually the reason why they no longer fit.

Oh, this is an interesting topic! 🙂

I also spent some time experimenting with the doors for Billy and noticed that there are many different construction methods. It’s almost as if IKEA has made small adjustments over time. New doors often look more modern, have improved hinges, or are slightly heavier, which can affect the fit.

Additionally, the base or the side panel can warp slightly over the years. If the shelf isn’t standing perfectly straight, the door won’t fit as precisely anymore.

Don’t worry, most of the time this can be fixed again—it’s very common for furniture to need some adjustment after a while! I think these kinds of challenges are what make furniture life interesting! ;-)

Hello peterbla,

Your suspicion is correct: IKEA has indeed made modifications to the Billy shelves over the years. The dimensions of the doors, the hinge mounting points, and even the material thicknesses have varied across different product generations. This means that doors from newer or older versions are not necessarily compatible.

Production processes can also vary slightly from batch to batch, so a seemingly identical door may fit better or worse.

Additionally, you should check whether your shelf unit is level and if there are any deformations caused by moisture or load. Sometimes the issue can also be due to incorrect hinge installation or wear.

If you like, I can share some tips on how to adjust the doors or hinges to improve the fit.

Best regards!

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I wasn’t aware that such a popular furniture classic like the Billy actually exists in different “generations.” That also explains why some doors fit fairly well while others are completely off.

Could you perhaps explain in more detail what types of hinges there are and how they can be replaced or adjusted if needed? So far, I have only seen the standard hinges mounted on metal plates used to attach the doors, but I never paid attention to whether there are differences within the Billy series.

Also, I’m wondering if IKEA or other suppliers still provide replacement parts for older model versions.

Best regards and thanks in advance!
