Hello everyone,

Lately, I have noticed that some of my BILLY doors stick when opening and closing. I’m curious to know why this happens. Are there common reasons that cause the door to no longer operate smoothly or sometimes be difficult to open or close? My guess is that it might be related to the door alignment or possibly material changes due to humidity or temperature. Are there any of you who have experienced this issue and can offer insights or even solutions? It would be especially helpful to know if this sticking is more common with standard BILLY units and whether it can be fixed with simple adjustments. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I know that all too well; it’s really annoying! In my case, the doors often stick because I live in an older apartment with high humidity. The wood expands, and the materials react differently – this causes the doors to warp, which then makes them stick. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen equally to every cabinet; sometimes it’s just one door behaving differently.

It can be frustrating because you expect the doors to be solid, but you have to adjust your expectations a bit with BILLY units, especially if the indoor climate isn’t ideal. Maybe there are tricks to stop the sticking permanently – I’ve considered adjusting the hanging rails a little or sanding the doors down. How have others dealt with this?

BILLY doors often stick due to incorrect installation or warped frames. The best solution is to readjust the hinges, if necessary slightly loosen the screws and reposition them. Wood expansion caused by moisture is also a factor, especially if the cabinet is against a wall that experiences fluctuations.

The issue with sticking BILLY doors is usually due to a combination of several factors:

1. Installation and adjustment errors: The doors should hang precisely parallel to the cabinet frame. Even small deviations in the hinges can cause the door to become misaligned. I recommend thoroughly checking all hinge screws, especially their inner and outer alignment.

2. Material deformation: BILLY furniture is made of particleboard, which is prone to absorbing moisture. High humidity or temperature fluctuations often cause the panels or door frames to swell or slightly warp. This promotes sticking.

3. Uneven flooring: If the cabinet is not sitting level on the floor, the doors may shift under weight or tension, resulting in sticking.

4. Hinge type and quality: Older BILLY models have simpler hinges with fewer adjustment options. Newer versions often allow finer tuning to prevent sticking.

Could you please describe in more detail if the affected doors stick particularly in a specific location or if temperature changes seem to have an impact? This would allow for a more targeted approach. Otherwise, I recommend a systematic adjustment of the doors, including checking the contact surfaces and the floor. Sometimes lightly sanding the edges that are rubbing can also help significantly.
