I have a question about the use of BILLY cabinets: Why do some BILLY doors start to squeak only after prolonged use? Initially, the doors open and close completely quietly, but after a few months or years, this annoying squeaking noise often occurs. What causes this? Is it related to the material, the installation, or certain mechanical components like the hinges? Are there preventive measures to avoid or fix the squeaking? I look forward to detailed explanations and practical tips.

The squeaking of BILLY doors, which usually occurs after extended use, is often due to a combination of material wear and environmental factors. Although the metal hinges are sturdy, they react to moisture or temperature fluctuations by altering the friction conditions. Additionally, dust particles and slight door deformations can affect the lubrication. Regular re-lubrication of the hinges with suitable silicone or Teflon sprays can help resolve this issue.

Exactly. Additionally, I would like to add that BILLY doors are made of MDF panels, which react to prolonged stress: engineered wood products slightly expand when exposed to moisture and contract in dry air. This affects the door’s fit and creates mechanical stress at the hinges. The longer the use, the more frequently these small movements occur, which promotes squeaking.

That sounds understandable to me. I know the problem from personal experience and am aware of how annoying such squeaking can be, especially when you use the cabinet frequently. There is also a psychological aspect for me: the noise only really becomes noticeable after you have used the door for a while without any issues – you become more sensitive to it. Maybe you could also consider whether the hinges are tight enough? Sometimes screws loosen, which changes the load and can affect the noise development.

Exactly, that’s why I recommend checking all the screws on the hinges before any preventive maintenance and tightening them if necessary. Many people underestimate the importance of regularly inspecting furniture fittings. Additionally, cleaning the hinges can help; dust and dirt often accumulate there and increase friction. If the squeaking occurs only after extended use, it is usually due to the lubricant on the hinges having worn off.

Tighten the screws, clean the hinges, then lightly spray them with WD-40 or silicone spray. If that does not help, you can replace the hinges.
