Hello everyone, I recently bought a BILLY shelf from IKEA and wanted to install the doors. I noticed that the doors don’t fit properly into the opening; they either don’t close flush or catch at certain points. I’m wondering what might be causing this? Are there known issues with BILLY doors that often lead to dimensional inaccuracies? Or could it be related to the construction of the opening itself? Perhaps the hinges or the installation process also play a role. Has anyone had similar experiences or tips on how to fix these fitting problems? Thank you very much for your help!

the doors in my case don’t fit properly into the opening—in other words, they either don’t close flush or catch at certain points.Hey, that’s a classic IKEA puzzle! 😊 This can actually happen with BILLY bookcases. Often it’s because the doors or the cabinet are slightly warped, or the hinges weren’t installed perfectly. Usually, adjusting the hinges can fix a lot. A little tip: try hanging the doors first and then use a screwdriver to turn the hinges slightly—that often helps align the gaps.
Also, it doesn’t hurt to check the opening itself for correct dimensions and squareness; sometimes it’s not the door panel but the cabinet that is out of square. 🙂 Sometimes it takes a bit of patience and a delicate touch, but I’m sure you can manage it!

Often the issue is that the doors or the cabinet body are slightly warped, or the hinges were not installed perfectly. That sums it up quite well, but I would add that IKEA furniture generally requires accepting a certain tolerance in measurements. The manufacturing processes are designed for high volumes, so a small amount of unevenness is sometimes unavoidable.
It’s also important to keep in mind that wood-based materials react to moisture. If the BILLY cabinet body or doors swell slightly, the fit will change. That’s why I consider it important to take into account the ambient temperature and humidity.
What I often see overlooked is the quality of the wall where the cabinet is placed. A crooked wall can also cause problems with door operation.
My recommendation: don’t just check the furniture components, but also measure the room—ideally using a spirit level and a protractor.

Are there known issues with the BILLY doors that cause them often not to be dimensionally accurate? Or could it be related to the construction of the opening itself?Hello loriix, basically, the BILLY doors and the carcass are designed to fit well together. However, problems can arise due to various factors:
1. Installation accuracy: The most important thing is that the carcass is perfectly plumb. A slightly leaning cabinet makes it tricky to attach the doors.
2. Hinges: They are adjustable, but within limits. If the carcass is crooked, the adjustment range may not be enough.
3. Material tolerances: The wood-based panels and doors can have small variations.
I recommend first checking the carcass dimensions, especially at the top and bottom, then properly adjusting the hinges, and if needed, lightly sanding the door frames where small spots catch. Normally, the parts fit together if everything is correct.
If you want, I can provide a step-by-step guide on how to optimally adjust the hinges.
