ᐅ Why do some BILLY doors no longer fit properly on the shelves?

luju68Hello everyone, I’ve noticed that some of the doors on my Billy bookcases no longer fit properly. Specifically, the doors don’t close smoothly, sometimes hang unevenly, or have too much gap on the sides. This issue mainly occurs with furniture that is a bit older or that I bought years ago but have recently ordered new doors for. I’m interested to know if others have experienced this problem and, more importantly, what the causes might be. Could it be a manufacturing issue, warping of the materials, or possibly a change in the door dimensions by IKEA? It would be great if someone could share their experiences or explanations.

This is usually because IKEA has changed the door dimensions or the mounting system. Exactly, mabla is right. IKEA occasionally updates product details without withdrawing the old quantities. So you end up kind of caught in the middle 😅 Also, wood can warp slightly over the years, especially if the furniture is placed in a relatively humid room. Moisture often causes the doors to expand and contract, which doesn’t exactly help with the fit.I would like to explain the issue in more detail. There are basically several reasons why BILLY doors no longer fit properly:
1. Dimension changes in new doors: Over the years, IKEA has slightly modified the door profiles and hinges. This leads to small discrepancies, so the new doors do not exactly match the old shelves.
2. Material deformation: BILLY shelves are partly made of particleboard, which reacts to moisture and temperature. Over time, the dimensions can change slightly or the surfaces may warp minimally.
3. Hinge adjustment and wear: The supplied hinges and their dowels can become loose, worn, or shift, causing the door not to close properly.
When combining old shelves with new doors, it is especially important to consider these points. Replacing the hinges or carefully measuring and adjusting could help.

Moisture often causes doors to shiftI can definitely confirm that. Recently, I felt like my doors were slightly warped, which made them stick. It was a bit frustrating since I care a lot about the appearance. But first, it’s important to stay calm: sometimes a simple adjustment or a little patience can help. It might also help to open and close the doors a few times to relieve minor tensions.
