Hello everyone, I recently noticed that some IKEA Billy bookcases sometimes have doors that stick when closing. I’m interested in understanding the specific reasons behind this. The doors actually have standard dimensions and are properly installed. However, it often happens that they don’t close smoothly into the frame but get caught or are difficult to close, especially with the older models. Could this be due to the hinge design, possible wood warping, or installation issues? Are there any particular technical features of the BILLY series that might explain this, or typical wear and tear that causes it? I look forward to your experiences and advice so I can better understand and fix the problem.
The BILLY doors sticking also annoyed me quite a bit at first! I also wondered back then if I had installed something incorrectly or if the shelving unit was just poorly made.
What I find really unfortunate is that Ikea doesn’t provide more detailed instructions, because many people think it’s due to incorrect installation and feel uncertain.
I think it would be great if Ikea offered an official guide or FAQs on this – it would prevent a lot of frustration! 🙂

Tighten screws and adjust hinges

This is brilliant, how many aspects are covered here! 😊
I had problems myself and was really relieved when I found out it was related to the hinges. After readjusting them, everything works perfectly again, no more jamming!
It’s important to remember, especially with Ikea furniture, that these are designed for simple self-assembly – a bit of extra tweaking shouldn’t be surprising.
So, don’t get discouraged! You can do it! Sometimes you just have to keep at it and try different things. Keep it up! :-)

Thank you all for the detailed answers and the different perspectives! The tips from Katau and NISAN about readjusting the hinges are especially helpful to me.
I will follow the advice: first check all the screws, make fine adjustments, and check whether moisture is the cause. I believe moisture-related wood swelling plays a rather minor role since my BILLY is placed in the living room with no direct source of moisture.
If the sticking continues, I am also considering minimal material removal along the edges to make the doors easier to close.
It’s also nice to see understanding for the problem here so that I don’t feel alone – that really helps with motivation!
