Hello everyone, I have been experiencing an issue with my Billy shelves for some time now: the screws keep loosening by themselves, even though I tighten them properly. This confuses me a lot because the shelves are not subjected to excessive load, and I don’t notice any unusual vibrations. The screws are tightened using the original Allen key and feel secure at first, but they often loosen just a few days after installation.
My specific question is: why do the screws in BILLY shelves suddenly loosen seemingly without external influences? Is it due to the material quality, the design, or could there be a common assembly mistake that many users might be making? I would appreciate well-founded opinions or shared experiences!

I would like to add that the type of screw and the angle at which it is driven in play a significant role. If the screws are not driven perpendicular to the panel, the thread will not anchor properly, making the screw more likely to loosen.
Additionally, tightening the screws again later, as already mentioned, is good practice since wood-based materials can settle over time.
If the load on the shelf increases (for example, by heavier items or frequent rearranging), this will also affect the screws. In this case, using thread-locking compounds can help improve durability.

I had a similar problem myself and then used a little trick: applied some wood glue or construction adhesive into the thread before screwing in the screws. That’s a very good tip!
I would like to confirm that the combination of engineered wood, load type, and environmental conditions (e.g., humidity) significantly affects screw retention. In very dry or fluctuating air, the material can change dimensions, which may cause screws to loosen.
For those who encounter this issue often, I recommend not only retightening but also paying attention to environmental factors and, if necessary, using small washers or appropriate locking devices.
