Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat technical question that has been on my mind for a while: Why do screws in Billy shelves tend to loosen by themselves, even when they have been tightened properly? I have noticed that especially the screws at the connection points between the shelves and the main frame tend to become loose over time, which significantly affects the stability.

I wonder if this is due to the material quality, the type of fastening, possibly the factory tightening, or whether everyday vibrations or loads play a role. It would also be interesting to know if there are mechanical or physical reasons, such as material fatigue or insufficient thread pitch.

Has anyone experienced this phenomenon and maybe has practical tips on how to solve the problem permanently? Thank you very much for your opinions and advice!

The problem is usually caused by the wood material expanding or contracting due to moisture. This causes the screws to loosen. A good solution is to use thread-locking fluid.

The phenomenon of screws loosening in furniture like the BILLY shelf is common with particleboard or MDF wood. The screws do not hold permanently because the material does not have the same holding strength as solid wood and can give way under load and temperature fluctuations.

I recommend using small wooden strips or even dowels for reinforcement. Alternatively, stronger connectors such as metal brackets can be used, which can be screwed directly in and increase stability.

This is exactly what happens here. It is made more difficult by the fact that the furniture is constantly subjected to stress, whether from weight or from slight movement during cleaning or rearranging.

Those who tighten the screws several times after assembly can prevent them from loosening too soon. It also helps to pre-drill the threaded holes if you modify the shelf yourself. Of course, small measures such as using thread-locking adhesive are also useful.

Wow, it’s amazing that we already have so many helpful tips here! 🙂

I have a BILLY shelf myself, and I regularly include tightening the screws in my cleaning routines. I also tried placing small rubber pads between the wall and the shelf to prevent minor vibrations or slipping – since then, the screws have held up better!

I think these small tricks definitely help to keep the problem under control. So for anyone still unsure: don’t hesitate, just give it a try! ;-)

I can understand how frustrating it must be when the screws keep coming loose—especially if you value a well-made piece of furniture.

Sometimes this happens because the shelf, for example, is standing on an uneven floor and is therefore constantly under slight pressure or twisting forces. This leads to mechanical stress that gradually loosens the screws.

It might also help to secure the shelf to the wall, which in my opinion takes a lot of the load off the joints. This also provides added safety, especially if you have small children or pets at home.
