Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble my Billy shelf, but I am currently facing the challenge of finding the optimal order of assembly—especially regarding the combination of the side panels, shelves, and back panels.

The enclosed instructions do describe the sequence, but I find it a bit unclear and somewhat awkward, particularly if you want to assemble the shelf without using clamps. Is there perhaps a simpler method or a proven workflow that makes the assembly more efficient and stable?

I look forward to your tips and experiences, especially on how you handle the order of the individual components and whether a different approach has worked better.

Hello Patena,

your question is very well formulated and addresses a common issue when assembling the BILLY shelf. I will try to outline the process in a structured way:

1. Start with the two side panels, making sure that the holes for the shelves face inward.
2. Insert all dowels and screws into the holes of the side panels, but do not fully tighten them yet.
3. Place the shelves into the holes of the side panels and check their alignment.
4. The back panel is recommended as the next step, as it significantly stabilizes the structure.
5. Afterwards, you can fully tighten the screws and, if necessary, fix the shelf to the wall.

A tip: If you don’t have clamps, you can lay the shelf on its back to make it easier to attach the back panel. This helps prevent the shelf from twisting while you screw it together.

If you like, I can provide more details on each step.

Hey Patena,

I do it like this: First, prepare the side panels completely with anchors, then install the shelves, and finally attach the back panel. Always install the back panel last to keep everything secure.

This saves a lot of time and ensures stability.

Great topic! The BILLY shelf really annoys almost everyone during assembly 😄 I have a little mental checklist for building it: first the side panels, then the shelves, and finally the back panel to secure everything. But the best tip: lay the unit on its back—this makes attaching the back panel super easy! Give it a try; it sped up my assembly by 50%! 🙂

That sounds like a handy trick, thank you! Could you explain a bit more why this makes attaching the back panel easier? I’m asking because I’m worried that if I stand the shelf upright before fixing the back panel, the parts might shift.

Sure, gladly!

If you lay the shelf flat on its back, the sides and shelves rest firmly and evenly on the floor. This prevents the structure from bending or twisting when you attach the back panel with nails or screws.

If you hold the shelf upright, the thin wood of the back panel tends to slightly warp the shelf, especially before everything is securely fastened. Laying it on its back allows you to attach the back panel more precisely and evenly, keeping the shelf square and properly aligned.

I have often done it this way myself, especially when I didn’t have clamps available.
