ᐅ Why are the screws coming loose in Billy's construction?

Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat unusual problem with my IKEA Billy bookshelf that has me a bit puzzled. Screws holding the shelf together keep loosening at various points. It’s not a case of screws coming loose due to being improperly tightened, but rather the connections seem to slowly come apart on their own, especially at the load-bearing joints. I have already been careful not to tighten the screws too much or too little and have checked all relevant connection points. Still, I get the impression that the screws gradually loosen during normal use.

Has anyone had similar experiences or can explain why screws tend to come loose on Billy shelves? Are there common causes to look out for? For example, material fatigue, incorrect screws, manufacturing defects, or perhaps mechanical strain from regular use? I would appreciate any advice that could help me resolve this issue permanently.

Thanks in advance!

For furniture, I recommend medium-strength threadlocker adhesives, such as Loctite 243. These can be removed later with standard tools and prevent screws from loosening due to vibration. Liquid threadlocker is more flexible than locking washers.

However, make sure to clean the screws thoroughly first to ensure the adhesive bonds properly.

In addition to REPITAR: Medium-strength threadlocker is ideal for furniture because it does not prevent retightening but only stops unintentional loosening. If the threadlocker is too strong, the screw may break during retightening.

It is also important not to overload the shelf immediately after installation, allowing the joints to settle. Wall mounting is definitely recommended as it eliminates much movement and prevents the connection from shifting.

If the shelf is located in a more humid area, using wood preservatives or dehumidifiers can help keep the wood moisture stable.

If you like, I can provide some product names that work well.

Does anyone have a recommendation for which threadlocker is best suited for furniture like Billy?

Loctite 243 or a similar medium-strength threadlocker works well. Just apply a thin layer to the screw, then tighten. Important: don’t use too much, otherwise it will bond very strongly later.

And don’t forget the wall brackets! 🙂
