Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat unusual problem with my IKEA Billy bookshelf that has me a bit puzzled. Screws holding the shelf together keep loosening at various points. It’s not a case of screws coming loose due to being improperly tightened, but rather the connections seem to slowly come apart on their own, especially at the load-bearing joints. I have already been careful not to tighten the screws too much or too little and have checked all relevant connection points. Still, I get the impression that the screws gradually loosen during normal use.

Has anyone had similar experiences or can explain why screws tend to come loose on Billy shelves? Are there common causes to look out for? For example, material fatigue, incorrect screws, manufacturing defects, or perhaps mechanical strain from regular use? I would appreciate any advice that could help me resolve this issue permanently.

Thanks in advance!

The problem with screws loosening in Billy bookcases is often due to vibrations. Make sure the bookcase is firmly standing on the floor and does not allow any movement. Additionally, I recommend using threadlocker or adhesive to prevent the screws from loosening on their own.

Hello BAON41,

Your description points to a common issue with furniture made from particleboard materials. These boards can slightly expand or contract due to changes in humidity and temperature, which over time can loosen the screw connections. Often, the provided screws and wall plugs are not ideal for permanent loads.

My advice: First, check if the shelf is placed in an area with significant fluctuations in humidity. Also, after tightening the screws, you can try using a suitable thread-locking compound. When screws are anchored in wall plugs, these plugs can become loose in the board over time, which further encourages the screws to turn.

If there are vibrations nearby (for example, from adjacent equipment), this will additionally have a negative effect on the screw connections.

I hope this helps you! 🙂

Hello BAON41,

Here is a summary of some reasons why screws in your Billy shelf might loosen and what you can do about it:

1. Material and fastenings: Billy shelves are usually made of particleboard reinforced with dowels. Particleboard tends to swell or shrink with moisture, which can reduce holding strength.

2. Assembly errors: If screws are not driven in deeply enough or the dowels fit loosely, the screws often loosen more quickly.

3. Loads and vibrations: Frequently moving the shelf or placing heavy objects on it can cause screws to loosen.

4. Screw quality: IKEA generally uses standard screws without special locking features.

Suggestions for solutions:
- Check the fastenings carefully and tighten all screws.
- Use thread locker (liquid or ring type).
- If dowels are loose, replace them or reinforce with wood glue.
- Is the shelf stable without wobbling?
- Avoid extreme moisture exposure.

For long-term stability, it also helps to secure the shelf to the wall.

Hope this clarifies a few points!

Loose screws in Billy are often due to excessive loads or incorrect assembly. Check the screw alignment and whether the screws are positioned at the correct angle. Sometimes tightening the screws with light torque or using thread locker can help.

That’s a very good point, as the shelf is indeed located near a window that is often tilted open. I hadn’t directly considered wood swelling caused by moisture.

So far, I haven’t used wall mounting and hadn’t planned to, but I could add that later.

To narrow down the issue further: Does anyone have a recommendation for the best thread locker or screw locking method for furniture like Billy? I’ve heard of medium-strength thread locker, as well as liquid and mechanical fasteners.

Thanks in advance for all the helpful tips!
