Hello everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: Why are some Billy shelves more prone to scratches than others?

I own two units that look very similar, but one shows signs of wear and scratches much faster and more noticeably, while the other still appears almost unscathed.

I have considered whether it might be due to different production batches, the material, or the manufacturing process, but I don’t know the exact reason. Perhaps the surface coating or how the shelves are used also plays a role.

Does anyone here have experience with this or know why some BILLY shelves seem more susceptible to scratches? I would really appreciate detailed explanations or tips on how to better protect the shelves.

Are there any specific cleaning products I should definitely avoid to prevent damaging the surface?

As an addition: Using wax polish on BILLY shelves is usually not recommended, since the surfaces are often made of plastic and polishing with wax does not provide any benefit but instead attracts more dust.

Additionally, be careful not to leave damp objects on the surface for an extended period, as moisture can penetrate the edges and cause the surface to swell, which damages the protective layer.

For minor scratches, I have had good results using special furniture touch-up markers. For severe damage, professional repair is worthwhile if the piece has high sentimental value.
