Hello everyone, I recently bought a few BILLY shelves from IKEA and want to fasten them as securely as possible. I’m wondering: which types of screws are the most stable for BILLY?

I’ve read that there are differences between the original IKEA screws and alternatives from hardware stores, for example regarding material thickness and thread design. I’m particularly interested in whether it’s advisable to use other types of screws, such as particleboard screws, wood screws, or even metal screws, to improve load capacity and durability.

Can anyone share their experience about which screws really work best for the load-bearing capacity of this shelving unit? I want to avoid the shelves becoming unstable over time or the screws loosening. Thanks!

Has anyone had experience with whether pre-drilling is worthwhile for BILLY shelves

Pre-drilling in particleboard like BILLY generally reduces stress buildup in the material, which lowers the risk of cracking.

It is recommended when using screws with a larger diameter or longer length.

For the original BILLY screws, direct screwing is usually sufficient.

For alternative screws, I suggest pre-drilling with a diameter about 70–80% of the screw diameter.

In my last project, I pre-drilled a bit because I chose thicker stainless steel screws, and it was super easy!

The shelf feels much more stable, and nothing has needed tightening so far!

Definitely a great method that I can highly recommend! 🙂

Exactly! Pre-drilling ensured that the material didn’t get damaged and that the screws fit perfectly.

I’m really happy with how stable the shelves have become because of it! 🙂
