Hello everyone, I recently bought a few BILLY shelves from IKEA and want to fasten them as securely as possible. I’m wondering: which types of screws are the most stable for BILLY?

I’ve read that there are differences between the original IKEA screws and alternatives from hardware stores, for example regarding material thickness and thread design. I’m particularly interested in whether it’s advisable to use other types of screws, such as particleboard screws, wood screws, or even metal screws, to improve load capacity and durability.

Can anyone share their experience about which screws really work best for the load-bearing capacity of this shelving unit? I want to avoid the shelves becoming unstable over time or the screws loosening. Thanks!

Particleboard screws are indeed the best choice for Billy shelves, as they are specifically designed for chipboard wood materials.

I recommend high-quality galvanized screws with a countersunk head and medium to fine thread.

The length should be adjusted to the thickness of the material; screws that are too long can damage the material.

Wow, a year ago I reinforced my BILLY shelves using stainless steel chipboard screws, and the stability has improved significantly!

I can only recommend this, especially if you plan to place heavy books or decorations on them! 🙂

That makes sense to me. I was worried that replacement parts from outside sources might not fit properly and could potentially damage the shelf.

However, I think it’s great if higher-quality screws can create a more stable connection.

But what about the screwdriver? Are there any difficulties when assembling screws made from harder materials?

That’s a good question. For harder screws, it’s advisable to use proper tools, such as a cordless screwdriver with torque control.

Applying too much force can damage the screw head, especially with cheaper screws.

Recommendation: Use quality screws with a Phillips or, even better, a Torx head, as these are less likely to slip.

Thanks to everyone so far!

In summary, I understand that the original particleboard screws from IKEA generally fit well, but using higher-quality particleboard screws with fine threads and countersunk heads made of galvanized or stainless steel can improve stability, especially under heavier loads.

The choice of tools is also important, particularly with harder screws, to avoid damaging the screw head.

Does anyone have experience with whether pre-drilling is worthwhile for BILLY shelves when upgrading to heavier-duty screws, or is driving the screws directly into the material sufficient?

Pre-drilling can reduce the risk of material cracking, especially when using thicker or longer screws.

This is particularly true for particleboard, as found in BILLY shelves.

However, pre-drilling is generally not strictly necessary with standard chipboard screws if the correct screw size is used and care is taken during assembly.
