Hello everyone,

I am about to assemble an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture and want to make sure which tools really help to make the assembly easier.

I am especially interested in whether there are specific screwdrivers, cordless drills, or additional aids that work particularly well with the Hemnes parts. I would also like to know if there are any tips on tools that make handling the sometimes stubborn wooden dowels or metal connectors easier.

Since I value clean workmanship and don’t want to get frustrated after just a few minutes, I would appreciate recommendations that go beyond the basic IKEA hex key.

Which tools and possibly strategies or aids have you used for assembling Hemnes furniture that have helped you effectively? Especially if you have experience with the typical issues that can arise with Hemnes.

Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello Radek0,

thank you for your detailed question! The Hemnes range is indeed somewhat more particular when it comes to assembly because many parts are made of solid wood and therefore require precise work.

In addition to the included Allen key, I recommend:
- A cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque to insert screws carefully without over-tightening.
- A set of various Phillips screwdrivers, as some screws in Hemnes sets do not always come with an Allen head.
- A suitable rubber mallet or small hammer to gently tap in wooden dowels without damaging the wood.

Many users often underestimate the correct positioning and alignment of parts before screwing them together—small clamps are helpful here to hold workpieces firmly in place.

It is also important to have a steady hand and to take enough time, especially with solid wood, which is not always precisely pre-drilled. Sometimes a light pilot hole with a thin drill bit helps if you notice the screws are difficult to insert.

Good luck with your project!

All of this sounds reasonable, but honestly: is all that really necessary for IKEA furniture? The furniture is designed so that the Allen key provided is sufficient and should avoid frustration!

In my experience, the real time factor isn’t the tools, but strictly following the instructions and sorting the parts before assembly if needed.

With patience, you don’t need cordless drills or elaborate extras. I see it more as a kind of exaggerated craftsman’s mindset that unnecessarily complicates the straightforward nature of furniture like Hemnes.

But sure, if someone wants maximum precision, it might be different. Still, the IKEA Allen key has worked perfectly fine for me so far.

I want to agree with that and add something: For me, the key difference is how motivated and organized you approach the task! 😊

Of course, I use a simple cordless screwdriver and a hammer, but what matters much more is calmly going through the instructions and having all parts sorted and ready. With Hemnes, that’s really valuable because many screws look identical and it’s easy to get confused.

What I also recommend is using a little wood glue when joining the wooden dowels and connectors; it stabilizes and greatly improves the overall strength.

And yes: With the right mindset and a little bit of fun, putting it together becomes really enjoyable!

So don’t just focus on the tools, but also on preparation and staying calm. Then it will work out great!

The discussion about tools for IKEA Hemnes is interesting, and I would like to add a factual perspective with some practical tips:

- Cordless screwdriver: A model with adjustable torque between 2 and 10 Nm (1.5 to 7.4 lb-ft) is recommended. This prevents the screws from damaging or splitting the solid wood.
- Various bits: Since IKEA’s BESTÅ series is quite consistent, for Hemnes you mainly need hex (Allen) and Phillips bits, often in 25mm (1 inch) length.
- Rubber mallet: Very useful for tapping in wooden dowels, as using a regular hammer can cause splitting if not done carefully.
- Clamps: To hold parts in place until screwed together, especially with larger pieces like dressers or cabinets.
- Wood glue: Optional, to be used sparingly, to improve the fit of the dowels and increase stability.

One more tip: With Hemnes, it can help to first insert all screws without fully tightening them, then tighten them finally. This improves the overall fit.

This combination makes assembly easier and noticeably improves the quality of the finished product.
