Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into maintenance and minor repairs for IKEA Hemnes furniture, such as changing screws, replacing connectors, or fixing small damages to the wood. My question is which tools are really necessary to work efficiently and without unnecessary effort.

I’m not only referring to basic tools but also special ones that might be useful for disassembling or repairing common IKEA joint types. Which screwdrivers (Phillips, Torx, Allen/hex keys?), special tools for dowels, wood glue, types of hammers, or other tools do you recommend?

Tips on the quality or alternatives to the original tools provided, like the small hex key, are also welcome.

I look forward to your knowledgeable answers and experiences so I can effectively work through the tool list and repair process for HEMNES furniture. Thank you!

Hello Blapeo,

your question is well formulated and addresses a practical issue. For repairs on IKEA HEMNES furniture, I recommend the following tools:

- Phillips screwdriver (PH2), as most screws in furniture construction use this type
- A set of hex keys (usually 4 mm, 5 mm) – IKEA often uses these sizes in their assembly instructions
- Torx screwdriver, especially T20, if you want to loosen deeper connection screws
- Rubber mallet or small wooden hammer for gently driving in dowels
- Wood glue in case joints have loosened or there are cracks
- Pliers for pulling out nails or clips if damaged

The supplied hex keys are generally usable, but for frequent repairs I recommend higher quality versions for better grip and durability. A cordless drill with adjustable torque can also make the work easier and help prevent damage from overtightening.

Care should be taken during disassembly, especially to avoid damaging the Lamello or cam lock fittings. For occasional home use, the above basic tool set is sufficient.

That's right, most of the time a 4 mm (5/32 inch) Allen key is enough for HEMNES. Plus a Phillips screwdriver, some wood glue, and a rubber mallet – then you're well equipped.

Hello Blapeo,

I would like to add to your question, especially since HEMNES furniture, due to its solid wood construction, sometimes requires a slightly different approach than typical particleboard furniture.

In addition to the tools already mentioned, it is important to consider the material itself when assembling and repairing. For example:

- A fine-toothed hand saw blade or multitool attachment can be helpful if wooden parts need slight adjustments or misaligned joints need correction.
- A chisel is useful for precisely reworking dowels or tenons if the joints are no longer as tight.
- Sandpaper or an orbital sander for edges and areas that need repair.

Additionally, I recommend having a small lever tool on hand when loosening fasteners to avoid damaging the surface – especially since the white finish of HEMNES is quite delicate.

Regarding original tools: The included Allen keys usually work, but for most DIYers, I recommend a robust tool set with handles, as this allows for applying force more precisely and gently. A small screwdriver with a magnetic tip also makes handling the small connecting screws much easier.

Finally: Take your time; HEMNES furniture is sturdy, but wood is a living material that reacts to stress. With the right combination of tools, some patience, and appropriate wood glue, you can successfully carry out even larger repairs.
