Hello everyone, I would like to start a focused discussion on the topic: Which tools are especially useful when carrying out repairs on IKEA Hemnes furniture?
I recently bought a sideboard from the Hemnes series, and after a few years, some damage has occurred that I want to fix myself. My main goal is to find out which tools are truly helpful for dealing with screws, dowels, possibly minor paint touch-ups, and stability issues.
I know that IKEA furniture often comes with simple hex keys, but I suspect that for repairs, you usually need a bit more, especially for long-lasting solutions. From your experience, what is most important? Which tools really make repair work easier without having to buy unnecessary equipment?
I look forward to your tips and maybe some advice on useful spare parts or aids that can make the job easier.

For repairs on Hemnes furniture, I generally recommend a few selected tools that make a difference:
- Cordless drill driver with adjustable torque: This saves effort and allows for precise screwdriving.
- Various hex keys (Allen wrenches), as IKEA often uses different sizes.
- Wood glue for cracked or loosened joints.
- A small hammer to gently tap in dowels.
- Possibly fine sandpaper for light touch-ups on edges.
You don’t need much more, but quality screwdrivers and screws are advisable if you are using replacement screws. I usually avoid special surface treatments – often, gentle polishing is sufficient.
It is important to carry out repairs carefully and without rushing to maintain the furniture’s stability.

I would like to add a few tips: Besides a cordless screwdriver and hex keys (Allen wrenches), a set of small flathead and Phillips screwdrivers is also practical. These are helpful, for example, when you need to readjust fittings.
For paint damage, it’s worth getting matching touch-up pens or repair kits specifically designed for the wood color of Hemnes. This way, any transitions are barely noticeable.
A small chisel or a utility knife is also recommended to carefully remove remaining wooden dowels or loosen wood splinters.
Such simple tools and materials help carry out repairs neatly and permanently.

What I would also recommend are self-adhesive felt or rubber pads for the feet, so everything stays stable during assembly and floors are protected from damage.
Overall, less is more, and it’s better to have the right tool on hand than a lot you don’t end up using. I’ve had good experiences with this during several Hemnes repairs!
