Hello everyone, I am currently planning to carry out some repairs on my IKEA Hemnes furniture and want to make sure I have the right tools ready. I am especially interested in which tools you find truly helpful and necessary to reliably fix common issues like loose screws, squeaky parts, or minor wood touch-ups. Perhaps you also have tips on which specialized tools from the hardware store are useful and when it’s better to stick with simple hand tools? I would appreciate your practical experience and recommendations so I don’t start out with the wrong tool selection.

A small tip: I do not recommend using a torque wrench to tighten the screws, as they are often over-tightened that way. It’s better to tighten them carefully by hand, and when working with Hemnes wood, avoid applying too much force as the wood can split easily.

I think it’s great that you want to get detailed information. Especially with Hemnes, it’s easy to accidentally cause more damage than repair. If you’re uncertain, start by applying less force when screwing. A small workbench helped me secure the furniture parts safely. This reduces stress and allows for greater precision.

Although this may sound trivial, a good tape measure or ruler is essential. Especially when you plan to install anchors or make repairs, it helps ensure accurate measurements. Also, a small hammer drill with wood drill bits can be useful when you need to drill new holes for anchors.

One simple tip: A fine chisel or a sharp utility knife can work wonders when you need to slightly adjust wooden moldings or molding joints under the paint. This is often underestimated but can be useful for certain Hemnes repairs.

That’s a very good tip, thanks.

I have actually been thinking about how to refresh the old wall plug holes. Is it better to drill new holes nearby, or should the old ones be filled? Does anyone have experience with this?

Old dowel holes should be filled with wood glue and appropriately sized wooden dowel pieces cut to length. After drying, you can drill the hole again. New holes next to the old ones may affect stability.
