Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the secure assembly of an Ikea Metod kitchen island and want to make sure I don’t make any mistakes regarding the modules used and the overall stability. Since I often worry that kitchen islands might not be adequately anchored or supported, I am especially interested in knowing: What are the best steps to ensure a safe build of Ikea Metod kitchen islands?

This could involve the selection and arrangement of base cabinets, the necessary fixings, how to avoid assembly errors, and how to prevent the island from tipping—especially when using heavy countertops or appliances.

I am looking forward to your tips, experiences, and possibly advice on tools or special tricks that make the process easier or safer. Thanks in advance!

Make sure to install the connecting rails and brackets that Ikea provides for Metod properly – these strengthen the stability and prevent the individual modules from shifting.

Thank you, TEOZAR, for the detailed tips! Could you please explain in more detail the best way to attach these connecting rails? Are there specific sequences or construction principles that should be followed?

I have also noticed that sometimes screws from other kits are used to make the connection even stronger. Is that advisable, or is it better to stick with the original Ikea materials?

Good question!

For attaching the connecting rails on Ikea Metod kitchen islands, I recommend the following steps:

- First, position the cabinets side by side and level them using a spirit level.
- The connecting rails are mounted on the side panels of the units using the pre-drilled holes, usually at the height of the shelves.
- It is important to tighten the screws evenly and not too tightly to avoid warping the units.

Regarding the question about different screws: basically, the original Ikea accessories for the Metod series are designed to ensure optimal stability.

If you want to use special materials (e.g., stainless steel screws for humid areas), you should make sure that the screw size and length are compatible with the pre-drilled holes to avoid damaging the structure.

However, the original material usually offers the best balance of strength and ease of installation for standard residential kitchen setups.

In my opinion, you achieve safety by definitely securing the island to the existing ceiling or floor.

That’s exactly what I wanted to say. Securing the island firmly to the floor really paid off for me. It also prevents the island from tipping over during use, for example by young children.

Using additional mounting silicone between the countertop and cabinets provides better adhesion and prevents slight slipping.

Additionally, I recommend using dampers or non-slip pads under the cabinet feet when the floor is very smooth. Even small movements can later lead to squeaking and instability.

In the end, I believe a combination of several steps is key for a secure installation: firm floor attachment, precise module assembly, and careful countertop fastening.
