Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my Pax wardrobe setup and have a question: Which shelves are recommended for use in Pax systems, especially if you value flexibility, stability, and efficient use of space?

I am not only interested in standard shelves from IKEA but also in alternatives or custom-made solutions that integrate well within the Pax frame. It is also important for me to know how these shelves can be combined with other components like adjustable shelves, drawers, or baskets.

Does anyone have detailed experience or tips regarding material thickness, load capacity, or adjustment options?

I look forward to your insights and experiences!

A different perspective on the shelves in Pax:

I think the constant hype around the official PAX shelves is somewhat exaggerated. Sure, they are optimized for the system, but they are also quite limited in terms of load capacity and design options.

Why not consider having custom shelves made by a skilled carpenter? This way, everything can be perfectly tailored to your needs – material, load-bearing capacity, dimensions. It is more expensive, but you get the wardrobe you truly want.

The idea of installing sturdy metal shelves or shelving systems from other manufacturers that can be wall-mounted is also worth considering. Just because it’s not IKEA-standard doesn’t mean it won’t work reliably.

In short: those who think outside the box usually end up with the better solution in the long run.

I completely agree. Especially if you have the time and patience to customize your PAX, it’s very worthwhile to compare different materials and suppliers.

From my experience, it’s also important to consider how you use the wardrobe day-to-day – for example, how often you rearrange or reorganize the compartments. If you want a fixed, more static setup, custom-made options can make sense.

If you prefer to stay flexible, standard shelves or the optional IKEA shelves are a good choice, even if they have limits in terms of load capacity.

Ultimately, space is also a factor. In smaller rooms, clever shelving with drawers and baskets can create a lot of storage.

Short version on the topic: Standard IKEA PAX shelves are suitable for clothes and light items.

For shoes or heavy objects, use stronger shelves or additional brackets.

Open shelves for quick visibility, boxes/fronts for dust protection.

A mix is best.
