Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my Pax wardrobe setup and have a question: Which shelves are recommended for use in Pax systems, especially if you value flexibility, stability, and efficient use of space?

I am not only interested in standard shelves from IKEA but also in alternatives or custom-made solutions that integrate well within the Pax frame. It is also important for me to know how these shelves can be combined with other components like adjustable shelves, drawers, or baskets.

Does anyone have detailed experience or tips regarding material thickness, load capacity, or adjustment options?

I look forward to your insights and experiences!

Hello tar62,

regarding your very good question: The range of shelves for PAX is generally large, with the most important factors being load capacity and type of fixing.

- Standard PAX shelves from IKEA are usually 16 mm thick, which is sufficient for regular clothing.
- However, if you want to store heavy items or many books, you should look for stronger shelves, such as boards that are 18 or 19 mm thick. These are not always directly available from IKEA but can also be custom cut.
- Another point is the fixing method: Most PAX shelves rest on small brackets that clip into the carcass. These support solutions have limits in terms of load capacity, especially when they are only attached to the side panel.
- For more stability, I recommend adding metal supports or brackets.

Regarding combinations with drawers and baskets: PAX is modular, so you can easily mix shelves with drawer inserts or wire baskets. It is important that the depth of the components matches (40 or 60 cm (16 or 24 inches)).

Could you tell me a bit more about how you mainly plan to use the shelves? Clothing, shoes, books? Then I can provide more targeted advice.

Good idea! Primarily, I want to hang clothes, but I also plan to include shelves for folded sweaters and jeans. Additionally, I want to store some shoes and occasionally smaller household items like bags or accessories. Books are more of a secondary consideration, just a few at most. The depth of the PAX frame is 60 cm (24 inches).

One thing I’m also uncertain about: Are open shelves recommended, or would ones with fronts or boxes be better to avoid dust and clutter?

Thanks in advance for the detailed feedback!

Regarding the choice of shelves for PAX, I would like to add:

Open shelves offer the advantage of better visibility of stored items and quick access. However, dust protection is indeed a concern here. If you want noticeable order and long-lasting cleanliness, a combination of shelves with boxes or closed fronts is recommended.

It is also worth considering whether to use a mix of heights for different types of clothing – for example, tall sections for hanging shirts and pants, as well as lower shelves for folded tops.

In terms of materials, MDF or particleboard shelves provide good stability, but if you build or add shelves yourself, solid wood can create a more elegant look and sometimes offer better durability. It is important that the material is not too heavy so that the shelf components are securely anchored within the PAX system.

Hi everyone!

I can only say that the PAX shelving units from IKEA have really proven themselves for me! The combination of fixed shelves and baskets is super practical 🤩.

- For sweaters and jeans, I like to use adjustable shelves, so I can stay flexible.
- The wire baskets are great for socks and small items that would otherwise get lost.
- I store shoes directly at the bottom on sturdy shelves, which can hold up well.

Just tried it out and it’s super flexible! So, don’t be afraid of standard solutions — they can be easily customized and swapped out when your needs change 😉!

Exactly! I also like using wire baskets, mainly because they allow air circulation. This prevents musty odors in sportswear or towels.

In addition, I installed shelves with glass fronts, so everything stays protected but still looks elegant. I think it fits perfectly in modern rooms. PAX offers many options for mixing and matching!

So don’t hesitate to combine open shelves, baskets, and fronts; it makes the closet much more functional and visually appealing.
