ᐅ Which screws must not be swapped during the assembly of the IKEA BESTA unit?

Hello everyone, I am currently assembling my IKEA Besta shelf and have a fundamental question: Which screws must I absolutely not mix up during assembly? The manual often includes different types of screws such as wood screws, dowels, or machine screws. Since some screws look quite similar, I want to avoid using, for example, a slightly longer screw in the wrong place, as that could later compromise the stability or correct alignment of the parts. Specifically, I am interested in knowing if there are critical screws that must be used precisely according to their function or load. Or is it acceptable to swap screws if you notice during assembly that one screw doesn’t quite fit? Thanks for your experiences and advice!

I just wanted to add that I once used the wrong screws for the back panel, and the shelf didn’t stand properly and later wobbled slightly. At first, I didn’t fully understand why this was happening. Only after I sorted and installed all the screws correctly did the problem disappear.

Maybe this helps to understand how important it is for the screws to be placed in the right spots.

That reminds me that when assembling IKEA furniture, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, especially with the small screws that look similar. It’s understandable to mix them up, especially when the screws are the same size. Maybe it’s best to take your time during assembly and sort the screws by type before you start fastening. That provides some reassurance – and particularly for the dowel screws, I’ve learned it’s better to double-check multiple times rather than quickly remove and have to start over later.

Do not mix up the guide bolts, otherwise nothing will fit. The back wall screws are large and have a different length, so do not interchange them. Apart from that, you can normally use other screws, as they are mostly interchangeable.
