Hello everyone, I am currently planning to modify the Ikea Besta cabinet to create a slightly more stable and durable piece of furniture. I am wondering which types and sizes of screws are best suited for this kind of modification. It is important to me that the screws can both withstand the stresses from everyday use and do not damage the material. I am particularly interested in screws for connecting the individual components and possibly for attaching new panels. Which screws would you recommend, what should be considered when choosing them (length, diameter, material, head type), and do you have any tips from your experience on which screws work best for a Besta modification? Thank you in advance for your expertise!

Who would have thought that screws could become such a topic of conversation in the living room! Jokes aside – I tried different types of screws, and in the end, it was exactly the 4mm (5/32 inch) countersunk screws that fit best with the Besta material. Important: don’t use screws that are too long, or you might end up with sharp surprises behind the panels. Stainless steel also helps keep the appearance looking fresh!

Countersunk chipboard screws 4x35 mm (approximately 0.16x1.4 inches) are perfect for the Besta conversion. Stainless steel is ideal to prevent rust. Always adjust the length to match the panel thickness.

I wonder, though, if you have considered using screws with different thread types?

Very good point! In furniture construction, chipboard screws are mainly used because they protect the wood material and provide good holding strength. For higher loads, metric screws combined with wall plugs can be used, but this often results in additional effort.

As an addition: For highly stressed areas, it is sometimes advisable to install threaded inserts to reinforce the thread.

Summary:
- For standard Besta modifications, use 4x35 or 4x40 mm (about 0.16x1.4 or 0.16x1.57 inch) countersunk chipboard screws
- For higher loads and special modification situations, use metric screws with wall plugs or threaded inserts

This is the recommended approach.

Summary: 4x35 mm (4x1.4 inches) stainless steel chipboard screws are ideal for most Besta modifications. Avoid using unnecessary specialty screws.

Exactly, I can only confirm that recommendation. This ensures everything stays stable without any risk of material damage.
