I have recently carried out several repairs on my Ikea Besta furniture, especially at the connection points, where the original screws tend to wear out or fail relatively quickly. My question to the community is: based on your experience, which sets of screws work best for repairing Ikea BESTA, particularly to ensure long-lasting stability and improved load-bearing capacity? I am not just looking for a simple replacement but ideally screws with suitable dimensions and quality that fit the common connection points of BESTA directly. Any advice on materials, thread types, and installation tips is also very welcome.

It is important to choose the correct screw size – typically M4 or M5 with a length of 20-30 mm (0.8-1.2 inches), depending on the type of joint. Thank you, that’s already a very helpful narrowing down. Could you perhaps explain in more detail the specific connection points in Besta, for example those with the so-called cam locks and dowels? From my perspective, this is often the weak spot, and you can’t just use standard wood screws here.

Could you please provide more details about the special connection points used in BESTA, for example those involving so-called cam locks and dowels? Yes, the cam lock connectors from Ikea usually require special screws with a fine thread, which are inserted together with the dowels. For repairs, it is recommended to replace these screws with original ones if possible or use high-quality metric replacement screws with a finer M6 thread. At the same time, make sure that the cam lock sits properly in the groove and is not damaged, because even good screws will not provide stability otherwise. Alternatively, steel fit screws can be used, which hold better due to their hardness.
It is also important to consider the amount of stress the furniture will be subjected to. In damp environments, cheap chipboard screws tend to swell and break more easily. My recommendation is to use stainless steel A2 or, even better, A4 screws with chipboard tips and medium or fine threading for interior use. This reduces the risk of rust and improves durability.

My suggestion would be to use stainless steel A2 screws or, preferably, A4 screws with chip point and medium or finer threading for interior use. Could you please provide a brief explanation of the exact differences between A2 and A4, and why this makes such a noticeable difference with BESTA? Are the higher costs for A4 really justified?

Are the higher costs for A4 really justified? A2 is stainless steel and usually sufficient for normal indoor conditions. A4 contains more alloying elements for greater corrosion resistance, especially when moisture is involved. For BESTA furniture in kitchens or bathrooms, A4 can be worthwhile. If the furniture is placed in dry living areas, A2 is adequate and more economical.
