Hello everyone,
I am planning to modify my Ikea Pax wardrobes to give the doors a custom look. This raises the question of which materials are best suited for applying to the doors without damaging the surface or losing adhesion over time.
I understand that the doors are usually made of some type of coated particleboard, possibly with melamine or a laminate. I am considering options like self-adhesive vinyl, wood veneer, adhesive foil, or maybe even wallpaper. Which material offers good durability, an attractive appearance, and can also be removed without leaving residue?
Does anyone have experience or recommendations on the best materials to use and what to pay attention to when applying them (e.g., surface cleaning, pre-treatment, type of adhesive, etc.)?
Thanks in advance!

Hello PIERO,
Your question about applying adhesive to Ikea Pax doors is very well thought out, and I’m happy to share some tips that should help you:
- The surface of the Pax doors is usually covered with a smooth melamine foil, meaning the adhesive surface is very dense and smooth, which can affect adhesion.
- Self-adhesive vinyl/PVC-based films generally work well. These films are flexible, durable, and have a strong adhesive designed specifically for smooth surfaces.
- Wood veneer adhesive films (so-called “veneer sheets”) can also be used, provided they come pre-coated with an appropriate adhesive. This gives a great natural look, but you should definitely apply a clear varnish over the surface to protect it.
- I would rather advise against wallpapers or regular paper variants, as they tend to peel off quickly and are less durable.
Preparation tips:
- Clean the surface thoroughly before applying, preferably with an alcohol-based cleaner to remove grease and dirt.
- Work dust-free, and ensure the room temperature is not too cold so the adhesive sticks properly.
If you test any films first, I recommend trying a small area to check whether the film can be removed without leaving residue.
In summary: PVC-based self-adhesive films and special wood veneer films are the best materials for durability and appearance. Wallpapers or other paper materials are less suitable.
Good luck with your project!

Self-adhesive vinyl/PVC-based films usually work well.Absolutely, I can confirm that! 🙂
Especially if you’re looking for colorful or patterned films, they are incredibly versatile. The surface of Ikea Pax doors is perfect for these films because it’s not too rough, and the adhesive sticks very well.
Important: make sure to clean thoroughly beforehand, otherwise you’ll get bubbles, and that doesn’t look good. But with a squeegee, it’s really easy!
And hey, if you ever want a change, these films can usually be removed more easily than you might think – giving you a lot of flexibility.
Give it a try, you’ll be impressed! Have fun customizing your doors!

Which material offers good durability, an aesthetically pleasing result, and can potentially be removed without residue? For good adhesion and easy removal, self-adhesive PVC films are recommended.
Seal wood veneer only with clear varnish.
Wallpaper is unsuitable.
Clean and keep doors dry before applying the covering.
