Hello everyone,

I am planning to buy an Ikea Pax wardrobe and am particularly wondering which of the different Pax variants have proven to be especially stable and durable with frequent use.

I am thinking of daily opening and closing of the doors and drawers, frequent loading of the shelves with heavier clothing items, and possibly use in households with children, where the wardrobe might be subject to rougher treatment.

Based on your experience or knowledge regarding the different carcass materials, door types, and fittings, can you say which versions are the most robust? Are there any accessories or reinforcements that you would especially recommend to extend the lifespan?

I would appreciate well-founded and specific advice, as I do not want to have to replace the wardrobe every few years.

Thank you in advance!

The stability of the Ikea PAX variants largely depends on the combination of the carcass, doors, and fittings.

- Carcass: The most stable PAX wardrobes have the classic 19 mm (3/4 inch) thick particleboard carcass with a melamine coating. Thinner and more affordable versions are often less durable.
- Doors: Sliding doors place more stress on the guide rails, so it is important to use high-quality rollers here. Hinged or folding doors with solid wood fronts are more stable than doors made entirely of glass or plastic.
- Fittings: High-quality hinges with damping systems for hinged doors ensure long-lasting durability. Since the PAX series is modular, it is usually possible to retrofit stronger fittings.

Additionally, I recommend not overloading the shelves and securing the unit to the wall, as this significantly increases overall safety during everyday use.

Overall, the “standard” PAX version with a traditional particleboard carcass, solid wood or MDF doors, and decent hinges is the most stable and performs best in everyday home use.

I like to go into a bit more detail because the stability of PAX depends on several factors. Here is a brief overview that can help with the selection:

1. Carcass material:
Ikea primarily uses particleboard with a melamine coating. Standard thickness is 19 mm (3/4 inches), with some sets using 15 mm (5/8 inches). For high load capacity, definitely choose the 19 mm (3/4 inches) option.

2. Door types:
- Hinged doors: Stable due to metal hinges. Ideal for frequent use.
- Sliding doors: Practical when space is limited, but the tracks and rollers must be of high quality. Look for metal rollers instead of plastic.
- Folding doors: Less stable, more suitable for light use.

3. Shelves and shelf panels:
The original shelves are 18 mm (3/4 inch) thick. For heavy loads, I recommend upgrading to thicker shelves or modular systems, sometimes with an additional central support.

4. Additional stability measures:
- Wall mounting is essential to prevent tipping.
- Metal reinforcement profiles can be purchased as extras.

Summary:
For heavy, everyday use, I recommend a model with a 19 mm (3/4 inch) carcass, hinged doors with metal fittings, and solid shelves. These options best meet the requirements for stability and durability.

If someone’s PAX has been standing for a while and the wardrobe wobbles, it is usually due to missing wall mounting or excessive overloading of the shelves.

Exactly, and to add: hinged doors are more robust than sliding doors.

That’s the most important tip—avoid the thinner version.

Absolutely, without wall mounting the wardrobe won’t be practical with frequent use. No special add-ons are needed, just use the recommended original parts.
