Hello everyone,

I am considering which Ikea PAX models are best suited for storing books, as I will soon need space for a larger collection. I am particularly interested in which PAX variants offer the most stable construction and sufficient load capacity for many heavy books. It would also be helpful to know if there are special interior fittings or accessories that make storing and organizing books easier, such as adjustable shelves or additional shelf inserts. Suggestions on the placement regarding the depth and height of the cabinets would also be welcome, as my room is limited and I want to maximize storage space in a small area.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations that could help me with the selection? Thanks in advance!

The most durable option in the PAX series for books is the model with a depth of 50 cm (20 inches) and a minimum height of 201 cm (79 inches). The reason is that these dimensions allow for sturdier carcasses and stronger shelves, which can support the weight of the books.

Additionally, it is highly recommended to choose adjustable shelves to flexibly accommodate different book heights. Extra-thick shelves from the accessory range further increase load capacity.

A tip: The back panel of the PAX should be securely fixed to prevent tipping. Wall mounting is essential anyway when storing heavy books. The PAX models with 35 cm (14 inches) depth are more suitable for binders than for large hardcover books.

I recommend PAX units with a depth of 50 cm (20 inches) and a height of at least 201 cm (79 inches). Adjustable shelves are essential. Secure the back panel to ensure it can support the weight well.

I can definitely confirm that! I have one at home and can say that the solid shelves really are the backbone of my book collection – without those sturdy shelves holding heavy volumes, chaos would be guaranteed. 😉

What I’d like to add: especially if you move things around a lot or try different arrangements, adjustable shelves make life much easier. You don’t have to settle for half-hearted compromises, but can customize the height for each row of books.

If you like a bit of color or variety, it’s also a good idea to use doors as dust protection in case the books aren’t accessed frequently. The PAX series is very flexible when it comes to door options.

Good luck with your setup – furniture that lives with your books is always a great thing!

I would like to provide a brief overview of what to consider when using the PAX wardrobe system for book storage:

- Depth: 50 cm (20 inches) is ideal for comfortably accommodating wider books. The 35 cm (14 inches) option tends to be too shallow.
- Height: A standard PAX with a height of 201 cm (79 inches) offers enough shelves that can be adjusted in various ways.
- Shelves: Make sure the shelves do not sag. IKEA offers reinforced shelves as accessories, which are worthwhile for supporting the weight of books.
- Wall mounting: Absolutely necessary, not only for safety reasons but also because it improves the overall stability.

Common mistakes include ignoring the maximum load capacity of the shelves or installing the unit without wall anchors. If you keep these points in mind, your wardrobe will be stable and long-lasting.

In summary:

1. PAX model 50x201 cm (20x79 inches) or larger
2. Adjustable and reinforced shelves
3. Careful wall mounting

With this setup, you can store your books very well without worrying about sagging or instability.
