Hello everyone,
I am currently looking for a suitable Ikea PAX model for a typical shared apartment room. The space is usually quite limited, so the wardrobe should be compact but still offer enough storage—mainly for clothes, shoes, and possibly some small items. It would also be practical if the model is relatively easy to assemble and flexible in design, since the shared living situation can change quickly. Are there any recommendations on which PAX variants work particularly well for shared apartment rooms? Maybe also experiences with specific widths, depths, or interior fittings? Thanks in advance!

However, I have heard that sliding doors are harder to clean? What are your experiences?Cleaning is not complicated, but the sliding tracks can accumulate dust, which sometimes causes the doors to move less smoothly. Regular cleaning with a vacuum cleaner attachment or a damp cloth usually resolves this.

Are there also options where you can combine drawers and open shelves?Yes, this is very flexible with Pax models. You can combine interior fittings – for example, open shelves for shoes and drawers underneath for socks. This way, the wardrobe can be well adapted to personal needs.

Cleaning is not complicated, but the running tracks can get clogged with dust, which sometimes causes slight stiffness. That explains a lot, thanks! I am just wondering whether the sliding door mechanism will hold up in shared apartments over the long term—especially if the door is sometimes pulled a bit roughly. Does anyone have long-term experience with this?
Another point I sometimes forget is the noise made when opening and closing—potentially an issue in shared apartments with people sleeping.
Regarding Danial’s points: I have had my PAX wardrobe with sliding doors for 3 years now in a shared apartment room, and the mechanism is still working perfectly. Sure, sometimes it squeaks a bit, but a drop of WD-40 fixes that quickly.
Regarding noise: If you keep the tracks clean, opening is quite quiet – perfect for shared apartment residents who need to get up at night 👍

Thank you all!
Summary for me:
- 50cm (20 inches) depth is usually ideal for small shared apartments
- Sliding doors save extra space but require more maintenance due to the tracks
- Interior components can be combined flexibly; drawers and shelves mix well
- Stability of standard models is sufficient; for frequent use, quality might need to be checked
If anyone has special tips for particularly space-saving PAX accessories, feel free to share 🙂
