NIKOLINAHello everyone,
I am currently considering purchasing an Ikea Pax wardrobe, but I want to make sure I choose a model that is especially durable and resistant to damage. My specific question is: Based on your experience or known user reviews, which Ikea Pax models or versions are the most robust, particularly regarding daily use, stress from doors and drawers, and material quality?
I am less interested in the design and more focused on long-lasting durability—that is, how well the wardrobes withstand mechanical stress, scratches, or moisture infiltration in case of accidental spills. If you can differentiate between surface materials, frame construction, or types of hinges, that would be very helpful.
Thank you in advance for your assessments, experiences, or recommendations based on long-term use.
Best regards,
Nikolina

Hi Nikolina,
thank you for your detailed question! To get straight to the point: the Pax models with glass or high-gloss fronts are quite sensitive – scratches and scuffs show up quickly. If you prioritize durability, the classic matte fronts (especially the white or dark brown ones) are better suited because they are less prone to minor damage.
Additionally, the most durable versions often have doors with soft-close hinges, which not only provide smooth operation but also reduce the risk of damage from slamming. The carcasses are quite sturdy across all models, but if the furniture will be heavily used, it’s a good idea to reinforce the interior with extra shelves or metal supports.
In short: For maximum durability, choose matte painted fronts, avoid high-gloss and glass, look for soft-close features, and consider adding interior reinforcements – that way, you’ll be on the safe side!
Best regards! 😉

Hello,
I would like to add a focused overview regarding the durability of the Ikea Pax models:
- Cabinet carcass: The carcasses are made of wood fiberboard with a melamine resin coating, which generally offers a durable surface resistant to moisture and scratches. There are hardly any differences between the variants.
- Fronts: The best results in terms of scratch and impact resistance are achieved with fronts covered with foil-coated MDF, such as the "Hyllinge" or "Fardal" models. Matte painted or foil-coated fronts are more durable than high-gloss models made of glass or plastic.
- Mechanism: Features like soft-close hinges and drawer slides make usage easier and reduce wear.
- Stability: Models with metal reinforcement in the interior structure (e.g., additional metal supports for shelves) are even more load-bearing.
Recommendation: For robust use, Pax models with matte foil-coated MDF fronts, soft-close functionality, and optional additional reinforcement are recommended. The "Hyllinge" and "Fardal" are good candidates. High-gloss or glass fronts would show visible damage more quickly under higher stress.
From a technical point of view, this ensures the longest durability.
Best regards.

For a child's room, for example, a front that is impact- and scratch-resistant might be more important than soft-close.
Installation quality is also a key factor—any negligence during assembly directly affects stability and longevity.
Another question I would like to pose to the group: Are there users who, despite the recommendations mentioned, have actually noticed long-term damage or weaknesses with certain models? Objective practical experience would help complement the theoretical aspects here.
I look forward to the feedback.
