frahannes24 Apr 2020 10:23Hello everyone,
I am planning to better organize my sports equipment and have been considering the Ikea Pax wardrobe system. My gear includes various items such as sports shoes, workout clothing, yoga mats, some small fitness equipment (e.g. dumbbells and resistance bands), as well as helmets and protective gear for cycling. Now my question is: which accessories or interior fittings of the Ikea Pax system are best suited to store such a diverse range of sports equipment in an organized, secure, and space-saving way?
I am thinking of combinations of shelves, drawers, hanging rods, or maybe special inserts. It is also important to me that heavy equipment (like dumbbells) is stored securely and that delicate items such as helmets are not damaged. Does anyone have experience with such combinations in the Pax system or alternative tips that could help organize sports gear? I would really appreciate your suggestions and recommendations!

Which fittings or interior components of the Ikea Pax system are best suited to store such a diverse range of sports equipment in an organized, secure, and space-saving way?Hey, great idea to store your sports gear in the Pax! I’d recommend using a combination of shelves for shoes and yoga mats – you can stack the mats neatly and line up the shoes side by side. For the weights, I’d suggest especially sturdy shelves, preferably made of glass or wood with a metal frame.
And very important: drawers! You can store small fitness devices and resistance bands perfectly in pull-out drawers; this keeps everything together and visible at a glance.
Oh, and for helmets and protective gear, maybe extra-large boxes or baskets on the lower shelves so they don’t get squished. That way you get everything well organized and easy to reach – almost like a mini gym in your closet 😄
I can fully understand how important smart organization of sports equipment is, especially when there are no extra storage rooms available.
That is really crucial. I myself have a Pax setup with sturdy shelves at the bottom where the dumbbells are stored, and several drawers above for smaller accessories. For helmets, I installed a pull-out basket lined with a soft cloth to prevent any damage.
It also helps me to always store heavier items at the bottom so I don’t accidentally damage other things when taking them out.
Has anyone tried this with a Pax system and perhaps used special inserts for helmets or similar items?

Hello everyone,
I agree with the opinions shared so far and would like to help clarify a few points for anyone not yet familiar with the Pax system:
The Pax system is very modular and offers not only shelves but also rods, drawers, and baskets in various sizes. For sports equipment, this can look like:
- Sturdy shelves that can be installed according to weight, ideal for heavy items like dumbbells
- Pull-out drawers or baskets for small items and accessories to keep things organized
- Clothes rods are great if you want to hang sportswear or jackets
- For long or bulky items such as yoga mats, shelves work well; a higher shelf might also be useful here
That’s a good tip. Additionally, Ikea fabric baskets can be perfect as liners to better cushion items like protectors or smaller helmets.
For delicate items, it is also advisable not to place anything too heavy on top to avoid pressure marks.
If you have any questions about the measurements or installation of internal fittings, I’m happy to provide more information.

edisondan26 Apr 2020 08:59For optimal use of the Ikea Pax wardrobe system for sports equipment, I recommend the following configuration based on dimensions and load capacity:
- Use the strongest available shelves in the lower third of the wardrobe, as the load limit here is up to 25 kg (55 lbs) per shelf. This is ideal for dumbbells and other heavy equipment.
- Install at least two to three wide drawers with smooth gliding mechanisms to store small items such as resistance bands and gloves.
- Use soft inserts or small boxes for helmets and protective gear to prevent damage. These can be placed on middle shelves.
- A hanging rod module is useful if you want to store workout clothes or sports jackets hanging. Make sure not to overload it to protect the hinges.
- When planning, consider the dimensions of your equipment, adjust the shelves accordingly, and secure them with the included fittings to ensure stability.
This configuration ensures efficient use of space, safety of stored items, and good organization.
