Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the care and protection of the surface of my Billy shelves from Ikea. Since these shelves are widely used in many households, I wonder: Which cleaning or care products are best suited to optimally protect the surface of Billy shelves without damaging the material?

It is important to me that the protective measures both extend the shelves’ lifespan and do not discolor or damage the typical surface of this furniture. I mainly use them for books and decorative items, so maintaining the aesthetic condition of the visible surfaces is also a priority.

Are there specific products recommended for melamine or laminate coatings? Or would it be better to use home remedies? And how often should such care steps be carried out to ensure lasting protection? I look forward to your experiences and well-informed recommendations!

For the maintenance of Billy shelves, I recommend mixing a mild dish soap with water and then drying the surface afterward.

Avoid using aggressive cleaning agents or waxes, as they can damage the coating. For protection, regular dusting and occasional damp wiping are sufficient. Nothing more is needed.

Hello Lienfi,

your question touches on an important topic, especially for furniture with melamine resin surfaces like Billy shelves, where it’s essential to choose the right cleaning products.

Melamine resin is durable but sensitive to strong, aggressive cleaners or oily maintenance products that can dissolve or dull the surface.

I recommend using a mild dish soap in lukewarm water, as mentioned, or specialized furniture care products designed for plastic-coated surfaces that are free of silicones and waxes.

Care should not be performed too often, since excessive moisture or polishing can wear out the surface. Cleaning thoroughly once or twice a month and otherwise dusting with a dry cloth is ideal.

Additionally, it helps to remove coarse dirt as quickly as possible to avoid scratches.

If you like, I can suggest brand names I have personally tested.

Additionally, it should be noted that the surface of Billy shelves is typically made of melamine resin-coated particleboard. This coating is durable and fairly resistant to moisture but is sensitive to solvents and harsh cleaning agents.

For optimal protection, I recommend a two-step care process:

1. Cleaning: Use a microfiber cloth with a mild cleaning agent that contains no abrasive substances. Make sure the cloth is only slightly damp to avoid water spots.

2. Protection: After cleaning, apply a special care emulsion designed for plastic surfaces. These formulations create a thin film on the surface, reduce static buildup, and make dust easier to wipe off. It is important not to use products containing oils or waxes, as these can soften or make the foil surface sticky.

I have had good results with furniture care products intended for matte finishes that are specifically suitable for plastic- or foil-coated surfaces.

The exact application frequency depends on how heavily the shelves are used: with intensive use or very dusty environments, the process can be repeated every 4–6 weeks. In less frequently used rooms, regular dust removal is sufficient.

If you wish, I can also provide a list of suitable cleaning and care products along with their ingredients to keep the selection transparent.
