Hello everyone,
I recently bought several Billy shelves from IKEA and want to maintain them so that the surfaces stay in good condition for as long as possible. The shelves are made of coated particleboard, usually with a melamine or lacquer finish, and I am wondering which cleaning and care products are best suited for these surfaces.
In particular, I am interested in:
- Which cleaning agents are suitable without damaging the surface?
- Are there any special care products that help preserve the shine or protect the material?
- What should definitely be avoided to prevent damage such as scratches, discoloration, or peeling of the coating?
I would appreciate any recommendations and personal experiences on this topic!

For grease stains, a diluted solution of denatured alcohol and water (1:10) works well, but test it first on an inconspicuous spot. Thanks for the tip, that sounds very helpful! Does anyone have experience with whether denatured alcohol can affect the color or gloss of the surface if used undiluted or too concentrated? I definitely want to avoid any fading or damage to the coating.
I’m also curious if long-term use of furniture care products based on melamine actually provides benefits or if it’s more of a purely visual improvement without lasting protection.

The solvents can dull the surface or soften coatings. When diluted at a ratio of 1:10, the risk is minimal, but always test on a small, hidden area first.

Is long-term use of furniture care products based on melamine actually beneficial, or is it more of a cosmetic improvement without lasting protection?Care products usually improve the appearance and can provide some protection against dirt, but they do not offer real, long-lasting protection against mechanical wear. The material itself is durable enough; maintenance mainly helps with easier cleaning and visual refreshment.
In summary: thorough cleaning and careful handling are more important than frequent use of products that could potentially damage the surface.
