Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to maintain some furniture pieces from the IKEA Hemnes series and would like to go beyond just wiping them down with a damp cloth. My main concern is which care products are best suited for Hemnes furniture, as it mostly involves lacquered surfaces and wood that should remain durable and resistant over time.

Which products would you recommend that are not too harsh, ideally environmentally friendly or at least do not damage the surfaces? Has anyone had good experiences with specific furniture oils, lacquer care products, or cleaners that are also suitable for solid wood like the Hemnes series?

I look forward to your tips and experiences – feel free to also include advice on what to watch out for when maintaining the furniture to avoid damaging the material.

Hello cihat,

First of all, it’s a good approach not to treat the care of Hemnes furniture superficially. The Hemnes series is primarily made from solid pine wood, often with a painted finish that provides both protection and a certain appearance.

For maintaining these pieces, I recommend a multi-step process:

- Cleaning: Use a mild, pH-neutral cleaner. There are often special wood furniture cleaners available that remove residues without abrasive effects.
- Care: After cleaning, you can apply a suitable furniture oil or wax. For the Hemnes series, a clear beeswax or a plant-based oil works well, as it penetrates deeply into the wood and helps regulate moisture.
- Protection: For the painted surface, avoid harsh solvents or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the paint.

It’s also important to care for the furniture regularly but not excessively — too much product can build up and make the surface sticky.

To advise you more specifically, I’d like to know: Are the furniture pieces heavily used, such as in a family with children, or primarily decorative living room furniture? This makes a difference when choosing the product.

As an example, I can recommend the care oil "Osmo Hardwax Oil," which is often suggested for solid wood and provides both protection and care without harming the painted finish.

Feel free to ask if you want more details!

Exactly, the versatile Hemnes requires especially "breathable" care products. For everyday use, I recommend a good furniture wax and only occasional use of a wood oil. For cleaning, lukewarm water diluted with a mild detergent is sufficient; harsh cleaning can damage the finish.

I’m really glad to hear you prefer ecological products! 😊 For Hemnes, I find natural treatments like walnut oil or beeswax excellent—they nourish the wood without chemicals.

It’s best to test a small area first to see how the finish reacts. Additionally, for cleaning, you can try a very diluted vinegar-water mixture, but be sure it’s weak enough not to damage the finish.

And very importantly: always use a soft cloth and non-abrasive sponges to avoid scratching.

Good luck caring for your Hemnes furniture—the series is truly a gem! 🙂
