Hello everyone, I have a detailed question regarding the protection and maintenance of the Ikea Hemnes series, especially the cabinets and dressers made of solid pine wood. I own several pieces and want to prevent them from developing unsightly scratches or discoloration, especially since the light wood appears very sensitive. What recommended measures do you know to protect against mechanical damage as well as moisture damage in the long term? Tips on the proper use of cleaning products, stability, and assembly errors would also be very helpful. I would like to know as precisely as possible how to best prevent damage in order to keep the furniture in good condition for as long as possible.

Are there really reliable practical experiences, or is this more of a precaution without a real problem?

My long-term experience with solid wood furniture confirms that taking precautions against moisture and heat is very important. Clear varnish provides protection, but it is not absolute. Even small, regular water rings can gradually become ingrained in the wood. Heat, for example from hot cups, can over time cause the finish to cloud and lighten the surface.

A constant indoor humidity between 40 and 60% is ideal,

This matches my observations as well and, in my opinion, is one of the most important preventive measures. A humidifier or at least regular ventilation is helpful here.

One additional tip for installation: Always use enough washers if they are supplied, as otherwise it can cause pressure marks in the wood.

Great topic here! At first, my Hemnes dresser developed water stains from spilled liquids. Since then, I’ve made it a habit to always use coasters and felt pads. I also regularly treat it with wood oil, which enhances the beautiful natural color and provides extra protection. So it’s not just about preventing damage, but it also looks fantastic! 🙂

Thank you for the many helpful tips, especially the details about installation and indoor climate—they have been very useful to me. I have an additional question: How important do you think the positioning of furniture within a room is? I am particularly considering differences between locations near windows versus more internal positions. Could direct sunlight or temperature fluctuations near windows possibly cause damage more frequently? Does anyone have specific advice on how to handle this?

Yes, definitely! Direct sunlight causes fading of the light Hemnes surfaces and can dry out the paint, making it brittle. In addition, temperature fluctuations increase the natural movement of the wood, which can lead to stress and damage.

My advice: If the location near the window is unavoidable, semi-transparent curtains can help reduce direct exposure. Also, make sure no radiators are located directly underneath or nearby, as hot air can further stress the surface.

Temporarily darkening the room during strong sunlight can also be beneficial. So, choosing the location with consideration of light and heat exposure is an important factor that should not be underestimated.

I love my Hemnes furniture and want to keep it for a long time! 🙂 That’s why I always use felt pads underneath and avoid placing hard objects on the surface. I also find it especially important to clean it with a lightly damp cloth to protect the finish. And yes, direct sunlight really isn’t good, as the beautiful colors fade quickly. But if you know that in advance, it’s not a problem! Stay confident, you can do it!
