Hello everyone,
I am planning to buy new shelves from Billy for my two children’s bedroom. I would like to know which Billy shelves are especially suitable for children’s rooms. Important factors for me are stability, safety, child-friendly dimensions, storage space, and possibly child-appropriate colors or surface finishes. Of course, everything should be sturdy, as furniture for young children can sometimes be used in unexpected ways 😉
Additionally, I am interested if anyone has practical experience with the different Billy versions, especially regarding the depth or possible additions such as doors or drawers. Suggestions for useful extensions would also be great.
I look forward to your opinions and tips!

Hey, that’s a great question! 🙂 For our kids’ room, I chose the Billy shelving unit in the lower version with a 40 cm (16 inches) depth. It’s perfect because it doesn’t look too bulky and the little ones can easily reach their things. I think it’s really important to secure it properly—make sure to attach it to the wall, especially with active children! We also bought colorful boxes that fit perfectly into the shelves, so you can organize toys nicely while keeping everything tidy.
Exactly, that was a big consideration for us too – the Billy really holds up well, and the option to add doors provides extra safety!
I can definitely recommend it, especially if you want to store books or school supplies later on. Good luck with your choice – it’s going to be great!

Hello FUKEFU,
I completely understand your concerns about stability and safety. Especially in a child’s room, it’s important to choose furniture that is not only functional but also poses no risk. The Billy bookcase is fundamentally stable, but as already mentioned, it’s essential to secure it to the wall.
If you want the bookcase to grow with your child, the standard height of 80 cm (31.5 inches) or even 106 cm (42 inches) is recommended, as children can reach the shelves independently for a longer time. For younger children, I also find the addition of doors or roll-fronts very practical to store toys safely while keeping things tidy.
That’s also a very good tip, as these boxes are easier for children to access and help them learn to tidy up in a playful way. There are now several color options available for Billy bookcases, including white, which often fits well in a child’s room.
I hope my experience is helpful to you!

Regarding which Billy shelves are especially suitable for a child’s room, it should be noted that the common depths for Billy shelves are 40 cm (16 inches) and 28 cm (11 inches). For a child’s room, 40 cm (16 inches) depth is recommended due to better storage capacity and stability.
Wall mounting is mandatory to eliminate tipping hazards, especially with younger children.
Doors can be helpful to reduce clutter; soft-close doors or sliding doors are recommended here to minimize the risk of injury. The surface should ideally be white or a light color to make the room appear larger.
Recommendation: Billy shelf with 40 cm (16 inches) depth, standard height (approx. 106 cm (42 inches)), white finish, with door attachment and wall mounting. For long-term use, pairing it with matching boxes or baskets can be useful to keep things organized and easily accessible.
Possible alternatives with integrated drawers should be considered if more enclosed storage space is needed.

Hey, the Billy shelf in the kids’ room is like the best buddy for book lovers and play enthusiasts! ?
That hits the nail on the head! Drawers create order if you actually use them – otherwise, unexpected toy monsters just disappear in there 😉 But seriously: For younger children, low shelves with doors are quite practical; this helps keep the mess under control and saves your nerves.
And to prevent them from starting a climbing adventure right away, make sure to install the wall mounting, or things can get chaotic quickly!
Colorful boxes are great, making tidying up almost fun – well, almost ? Enjoy setting it up – the Billy family grows fast and quickly becomes the favorite piece of furniture!
