Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into choosing a suitable BILLY shelving unit from IKEA and specifically want to find out which BILLY models or variants are particularly well suited for heavier items.

I am interested not only in the official weight specifications but also in practical everyday experience: How sturdy are the shelves when fully loaded? Are there differences in material thickness, back panels, or shelves that provide better load capacity? Additionally, I would like to know if certain BILLY versions, for example those with reinforced shelves or special construction, are better suited to carry heavier loads over time.

Who has detailed information or personal experience on this? Which models from the BILLY range would you confidently recommend for somewhat heavier objects?

Thanks in advance for your support!

Hey!

I’ve used several BILLY shelves for heavier items and really like the models with the stronger shelves! 🙂 The thicker boards you can order separately make a big difference! I’ve set up my shelves to hold even heavy boxes and cutlery drawers.

It’s important to secure the shelf to the wall; otherwise, it will wobble quickly under weight! That’s really my key advice!

My BILLY (80x28 cm (31.5x11 inches), tall) easily supports about 30 kg (66 pounds) per shelf with the thicker boards. If you need to hold even more weight, just install additional support strips—it's not complicated and definitely worth it :-)

Good luck, you’ll manage!

For heavy loads, the BILLY models with the robust wooden shelves have proven reliable.

You won’t find any metal reinforcements in BILLY.

My tip: don’t forget wall mounting, regardless of the model. This prevents tipping under heavy loads.

BILLY with standard shelves can support heavy loads, but it depends on the type of load.

The wider version combined with thicker shelves and wall mounting is definitely the best solution.

Never use glass shelves for heavier items!

The maximum load capacity of a single shelf board is about 25 kg (55 lbs) evenly distributed, according to IKEA.

This information is a manufacturer’s recommendation and should be taken with caution. In practice, the actual load capacity can vary significantly depending on the age of the shelving unit, humidity, and usage conditions.

This highlights the point that thicker boards effectively increase the load capacity. However, users should be aware that regular inspection of the shelving unit and, if necessary, reinforcements such as support strips are advisable to prevent damage and accidents.

In the long term, a combination of reinforced shelves, narrower shelving units (to reduce sagging), and secure wall anchoring systems is the safest approach.

Thank you all for the many helpful answers so far!

In summary, I have gathered that I should lean towards the wider models with thicker shelves. The versions with 18-22 mm (0.7-0.9 inch) thick shelves look more robust compared to the standard 12 mm (0.5 inch) shelves.

Your advice on wall mounting is also very important—I might have underestimated that otherwise.

Regarding the type of load: I mainly want to accommodate heavy technical books and several small technical devices that apply pressure at specific points (e.g., large cameras, tools).

Does anyone have recommendations for modular interior reinforcements for shelves that can be installed quickly? Or do these always have to be custom-made solutions?

Looking forward to more tips! 🙂
