Hello everyone,

I have decided to get the IKEA Hemnes shelving unit and want to assemble it myself. I have a question: which assembly steps are essential for achieving a stable and safely functioning cabinet?

I have noticed that there are multiple components and types of screws, and I would like to know if there are any particularly critical steps or tips that should definitely be followed. In particular, I am interested in whether there is a specific order for assembling the parts or screws that is crucial for stability.

Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hello lilime,

I can provide you with a detailed step-by-step guide that will help you avoid common mistakes when assembling the IKEA Hemnes shelving unit.

1. Preparation: First, check that all screws, wooden parts, and fittings are complete. Sort them by type, as this makes assembly easier.

2. Side panels and back panel: Assemble the side panels first, then carefully, but squarely, attach the back panel. The back panel is essential for the unit’s structural stability.

3. Shelves and reinforcements: Make sure the shelves fit exactly into the designated holes and secure them firmly. Mistakes here can cause sagging later on.

4. Use screws as instructed: Do not substitute screws not specified in the instructions, as the load-bearing capacity is guaranteed only with the correct hardware.

5. Screwdriver and torque: Tighten the screws firmly but do not over-tighten. The wood cannot handle excessive force and may split.

6. Final check: Inspect the entire unit for stability and adjust any screws if necessary.

Tip: Especially with the Hemnes model, it is important to install the back panel completely flat and tight. Often people try to just “quickly” screw it on, which later leads to a wobbly shelf.

I hope this helps. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!

I can only agree with that, but I would like to add a few technical details that are often overlooked. The back panel is indeed the key element for stability in Hemnes furniture. It is important to:

- Install the back panel so that all edges are flush, ensuring it is neither too loose nor under tension.
- The back panel is usually fixed with small nails (often called “panel pins”). These must not be driven in at an angle, as they can split the wood or come loose.
- A tip: lightly scoring the nails with a hammer before driving them in helps achieve more precise placement.
- The side panels should be fully screwed together before attaching the back panel, as it can be difficult to reach the screws in the narrow edge areas afterwards.

Another important point concerns the shelves:
- Check that the shelf support pegs fit firmly into the side panels.
- Avoid overloading shelves, especially if they rest only on plastic pegs.

Finally, a practical note: especially with Hemnes, the screws in MDF or particleboard do not always provide the strongest connection. Therefore, if more load is expected, it is advisable to reinforce with additional screws or glue, but only if this does not void the warranty.

Which version are you building, lilime? The three-piece shelving unit or the larger cabinet? The assembly order can vary slightly depending on the model.

Thanks in advance for the detailed answer, Domau0! I’m planning to assemble the classic Hemnes shelving unit with five compartments and doors, so not the three-piece or cabinet model. It’s more of a single shelving unit that can also be used standing alone.

The advice about carefully installing the back panel and the tips on the shelves are very helpful.

What I find difficult is deciding when and in what order the doors should be installed.

Do you or anyone else have tips on whether the doors should be fitted at the end or during the entire assembly process? I’m worried that when installing the doors, a lot of adjustment will be needed if the side panels aren’t perfectly aligned.

Also, I’m interested in the best way to handle the hinges – is there a trick to prevent the doors from sagging or warping later on?
