Hello everyone,

I am currently working on assembling IKEA Platsa and came across the topic of assembly screws. Since this cabinet series is very modular and flexible, I am particularly interested in which assembly screws are the most stable to ensure the load-bearing capacity and long-term stability of the individual modules.

I am curious about the following points:
- Should the original screws be used, or are there better alternatives from third-party suppliers?
- Which types of screws (e.g., particleboard screws, wood screws, wall plugs) are recommended in terms of load capacity and durability?
- Are there any experiences with special screws that better prevent pull-out or loosening?

For example, I plan to use the modules not only as simple storage furniture but also to place heavy loads inside or mount them on the wall. Therefore, sustainability and maximum stability are very important to me.

I would greatly appreciate well-founded recommendations and shared experiences!

In general, for PLATSA: The original screws are well matched to the material used – these are mainly electrical fasteners and small chipboard screws designed for quick assembly. However, when maximum stability is required, especially for heavy loads or wall mounting, it is advisable to replace these screws with high-quality zinc-plated chipboard screws.

- Length: 50 to 60 mm (2 to 2.4 inches) provides optimal grip in the panels without risking material splitting.
- Diameter: 4 to 5 mm (0.16 to 0.2 inches) is ideal for high tensile strength.
- Screw head: A countersunk head with a Phillips drive offers the best grip and can be recessed flush.

Using durable chipboard screws together with appropriate anchors, for example in wall fixings, significantly increases the stability of the construction.

Types such as wood screws or universal sheet metal screws are less suitable because they do not grip chipboard optimally or improve stability.

Conclusion: The original screws are suitable for standalone assembly, but for increased weight, wall mounting, or long-term use, I recommend better chipboard screws plus suitable anchors.

That’s true – IKEA knows which screws come with the table and adapts the system accordingly. However, stability depends not only on the screws but also on proper assembly.

In my opinion, when it comes to stability, the material and the quality of the tightening are just as important. Over-tightening the small screws can damage the particleboard.

For modules that will bear permanent loads or be mounted to a wall, I strongly recommend using the original anchors and, if necessary, suitable metal brackets to minimize shear forces.

Alternatively, I have used wood screws with a larger diameter in one project, but these only make sense if the materials at the back are adequately reinforced; otherwise, they have little effect.

In any case, it is important to distribute the load evenly and avoid stressing the screws at just a single point.

For an objective addition: particle board screws are generally the first choice for furniture like PLATSA, as they are specifically designed for engineered wood materials.

- Zinc-plated particle board screws with medium to coarse threads provide better grip in chipboard panels.
- For maximum strength, I recommend screws with a diameter of about 4.5 mm (0.18 inches) and a length of at least 50 mm (2 inches).
- Mounting anchors can further increase tensile strength, especially when heavy loads are attached to the wall.

It is important to pay attention to the quality of the screw material. Cheap screws made of soft metal tend to bend or pull out more easily.

In addition, using metal brackets and backing plates can improve stability.

Technically, high-quality particle board screws combined with appropriate anchors and solid fastening are the best way to assemble PLATSA furniture securely.
