ᐅ Which screws are best for long-term stability in Ikea PLATSA units?

Finan6Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to assemble Ikea Platsa furniture pieces so that they remain stable and durable over the long term. My specific question is: based on your experience, which types and sizes of screws are best suited to achieve the highest possible long-term stability for PLATSA furniture? I am particularly interested in whether the original screws are sufficient or if alternatives (such as higher-quality chipboard screws, wood screws, or even special fittings) are recommended. Additionally, any tips on the correct screwing techniques would be helpful, as I’ve often heard that the material is quite delicate and can be easily damaged. Thanks in advance for your detailed advice and experience!

Alberto515 Dec 2020 10:22I understand your desire for long-lasting stability. In my experience, the included screws are convenient, but after a few years, you notice a loss of strength. That’s why I switched to high-quality chipboard screws – a bit more expensive, but they provide a much greater sense of security. Have you ever considered using color-matched screws as replacements to avoid affecting the design?
The original screws of the PLATSA system are typically wood screws with medium threads, designed for particleboard. For improved long-term stability, I recommend:
- Screws with a larger diameter (at least 4 mm (0.16 inches) instead of 3 mm (0.12 inches))
- Longer screws to increase the grip area in the material
- Galvanized or stainless steel screws to protect against corrosion
- Pre-drilling to prevent splitting the material and to improve anchoring
However, screws should not be too thick, as this can cause the particleboard to crack. Alternatively, elongated hole fittings or angle brackets can be used to provide additional stability.

It is important to me to screw slowly and pre-drill, as the material can easily tear otherwise. Additionally, you should avoid fully tightening the screws at once and instead tighten them carefully. Angle brackets also help with corner joints to increase stability, especially when the furniture is moved or rearranged.
