Hello everyone, I have been experiencing an issue with my Billy shelves for some time now where the doors creak unpleasantly when opening and closing. It seems to be especially related to the hinges, as the noise mostly originates there. Does anyone have tips on how to effectively and permanently eliminate this creaking? I prefer solutions that don’t just provide a temporary fix but address the root cause of the problem. Thanks in advance!

Graphite powder is actually a very clean solution since it contains no oil and therefore doesn’t stick or attract dust. It works well for visible hinges.

However, you should make sure it spreads evenly; otherwise, the hinge won’t operate smoothly. For concealed hinges, it might be impractical because the powder doesn’t reach those areas easily.

I often wonder why everyone at BILLY immediately reaches for lubricants.

Try spraying WD-40 on the hinges first

WD-40 is not really a lubricant; it is more of a cleaner and does not provide lasting protection. It only temporarily suppresses squeaking.

My advice: You should look for the root cause – most of the time, the hinges are not the real problem, but rather wood tension or poor installation. Simply lubricating without addressing the cause is just treating the symptoms.

My simple approach: unscrew the hinges, clean them, and then lubricate properly with a bit of petroleum jelly or sewing machine oil. This lasts a long time and is easy to find.

I would recommend completely unscrewing the hinges first, removing the door, and carefully deburring the hinge pivots using fine sandpaper. Then clean them thoroughly and treat with wax or hinge oil. This will permanently reduce squeaking.
