Hello everyone, I am looking for helpful tips and experiences on how to make Billy shelves childproof. Specifically, I am interested in effective measures to prevent tipping, as well as how to secure sharp corners or loose parts. Are there any proven methods you would recommend for the long term, especially when there are small children in the house who like to climb or pull things off the shelves? Thanks in advance!
I can fully understand how important this topic is to you. Especially when children are already mobile, you constantly worry about whether everything is truly safe. What helped me a lot was securely anchoring the BILLY shelves to the wall. Without wall mounting, I was afraid that everything might topple over if the kids climbed on them. For this, I used the original IKEA wall brackets plus additional metal corner braces.
This should definitely be the top priority. Additionally, I arranged the lower shelves so that no heavy items are within children’s reach and protected the corners with these soft corner cushions.
It’s probably not perfect, but it works well for us and brings a bit of peace of mind in daily life 🙂

Hey, great question! 😄 I think the BILLY shelves are really good, but without securing them, they can be like a small climbing frame for little kids. Here are my tips:
1. Wall mounting is absolutely essential – no discussion!
2. For the sharp corners, I use soft foam corner protectors, which you can get cheaply at hardware stores.
3. Heavy or dangerous items (e.g., glass, sharp objects) should be placed on the top shelves or inside closed compartments.
Exactly, safety comes first – and even if you put a mat in front of the shelf, you still have to be careful, but everything’s manageable!

For wall mounting, I recommend using high-quality anchors and screws suitable for the wall type; for drywall, for example, use special hollow wall anchors. Additionally, it helps to avoid placing too many items on the upper part of the shelf to increase stability.
Besides foam padding, self-adhesive silicone edge protectors can also provide good results. Loose back panels should be secured additionally to prevent objects from falling out.
