Hello everyone,

In the past few weeks, I have proudly become the owner of an Ikea Hemnes bed, and I now have an annoying problem: the bed squeaks with every movement, especially when I turn over or get up. Since I find the construction quite solid, I assume it must be a small detail that I am overlooking.

Specifically, I have already checked whether all screws are tight and have retightened them several times – yet the squeaking continues. My suspicion falls on wood-to-wood friction at the side slat fixtures or possibly at the support points.

My question to you: What are your proven methods for permanently silencing squeaky Hemnes beds? Are there certain products, such as lubricants, or special mounting techniques I should try? I would prefer not to replace any parts but to fix the problem using the original components.

Thanks for any tips and your experiences!

Hello Fratau,

your issue with the squeaking on the Ikea Hemnes bed is a common problem, often caused by wooden joints and fastening points. To help you systematically, here are some technical tips and background information:

- Tightening the screws correctly is important, but sometimes the problem comes from movement between wood on wood or wood on metal. This creates friction marks that cause squeaking.

- Check carefully where the squeaking occurs: Is it at the corners, the side panels, or the slatted bed base? Test this by touching and moving the areas individually.

- A proven trick is to insert small felt or plastic washers at the contact points, especially where wood hits wood. These help reduce creaking.

- Alternatively, paraffin-based wax or dry lubricants (e.g., graphite powder) applied to the contact surfaces can reduce friction without causing stickiness.

- The squeaking might also come from the slatted bed base: here, check all fastenings and try repositioning the base to see if that helps.

- Finally, make sure the bed frame is perfectly level and stable on the floor. Unevenness can create forces that lead to noises.

If you like, you can share exactly where the noise is loudest, so we can assist you more precisely.

I can only agree with that. Often, it’s the small, almost invisible details. I would also recommend not only tightening screw connections but checking the wood threads: if the pilot hole diameter is too large, the screw won’t hold properly and may vibrate loose. If you are using nuts and bolts, check whether they loosen and might need to be secured with thread locker or simple wooden blocks.

Some users have also had success with silicone grease instead of oil or wax. It stays flexible and prevents wood dust from binding and causing new friction.

Regarding the slatted frame: some hooks and support points can be slightly bent. This prevents the frame from resting evenly and causes noise.

So, in my experience, working through the entire chain of connections during troubleshooting is the best approach.

I know that problem all too well! Giving your bedroom a nightly soundtrack is definitely not what you wanted 😉

When I had my Hemnes bed, I sacrificed a small wax bear from my craft box – well, actually, I rubbed candle wax on the typical wooden contact points. That helped for weeks.

If you don’t have candle wax on hand, you can also apply a simple bar of soap (not too wet), which often reduces friction quite well. It’s important not to use too much liquid, otherwise the wood will absorb it, making the problem worse.

Another trick of mine: occasionally disassemble the bed slightly, removing the slatted frame and loosening the bed frame, then carefully reassemble everything and tighten the fittings – often, it’s just a slight misalignment causing the noises.

A bit of a hassle, but with a little humor, it’s not so bad 😊

Good luck hunting down the squeak demon!
