pinsin46Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my BILLY shelves from IKEA—the doors noticeably wobble when opened. The unit itself isn’t really crooked, but as soon as I open the doors, it feels unstable. The doors are installed correctly and close properly, but this wobbling makes me unsure if the shelf will hold up without damage over time.
Do you have any experience or tips on how to prevent this wobbling? Are there specific adjustment options on the hinges or other tricks to make the unit more stable?
I’d appreciate any help, as I don’t plan to replace the shelf anytime soon.
Thanks in advance!

The shelf itself isn’t actually crooked, but as soon as I open the doors, it feels unstable. That sounds really frustrating! I had a similar issue once, and what helped me was tightening the screws on the hinges a bit more. They often become slightly loose during assembly or over time.
Also, I made sure the shelf was standing on a perfectly level surface—even small unevenness can cause wobbling. A spirit level and, if needed, furniture pads can be worthwhile investments.
I hope this helps at least a little. Sometimes it’s a combination of several small adjustments. Don’t get discouraged!

Are there special adjustment options on the hinges or other tricks to make the shelving unit more stable?Yes, BILLY shelving units come with adjustable single-hole snap fittings on the doors that can be fine-tuned, for example.
1. Check the door hinge screws: They often become loose after a few months. A slight readjustment improves the fit.
2. Latching mechanism (magnetic catch): Make sure they are properly seated and close firmly so the door doesn’t swing.
3. Wall mounting: BILLY units usually come with wall mounting brackets. These are often underestimated but provide significant stability. I strongly recommend securing the shelf to the wall using the supplied brackets.
4. Level alignment: Even small unevenness in the floor can cause wobbling. Rubber feet or felt pads can help improve stability.
These measures are proven and have significantly improved stability in my own experience.

I strongly recommend screwing the shelf to the wall using the included brackets. It is absolutely essential to secure the shelf to the wall. I’d like to add a step-by-step plan that made a big difference for me:
1. Check with a spirit level to ensure the shelf is perfectly horizontal. Even if it looks straight, there are often slight tilts.
2. If needed, adjust the plastic leveling feet so the shelf stands firmly on all corners.
3. Slightly loosen the screws on the door hinges, realign the door, and then tighten them again. This allows you to adjust the door height and depth so it fits snugly.
4. Check the catches or magnetic latches to make sure they are secure and hold the door properly. A loose door quickly causes wobbling.
5. Be sure to fasten the shelf to the wall using the supplied metal brackets.
A common major mistake is just placing the shelf on the floor and opening the doors. Especially with taller units, this causes forces that make the shelf unstable.
If you’re dealing with wall materials like drywall, I recommend using appropriate anchors (toggle or molly bolts) – these significantly increase stability.
Can you confirm whether you have fastened the shelf to the wall and if the floor is completely level?

Make sure to attach the shelf securely to the wall using the supplied metal brackets.Oh yes, that’s not only sensible but also very safe! Here’s a little tip for you: when installing the wall mounting, it’s best to use small felt pads between the shelf and the wall. They prevent the paint from peeling off if the shelf moves slightly back and forth.
Also, I always place a few felt or rubber pads under the feet. This helps if your floor is slightly uneven and ensures a steadier stand.
And honestly: a wobbly BILLY shelf just doesn’t look great, so it’s definitely worth the effort. Good luck with securing it – you’ve got this! 👌😉
