Hello everyone, I have been having an issue for some time with the hinges on my Billy shelf constantly squeaking. The noise is quite annoying, especially when opening and closing the doors frequently. I suspect it might be due to insufficient lubrication or possibly dirt inside the hinges, but I’m not sure. Does anyone have experience with how to reliably and permanently eliminate this squeaking? Which products or methods have proven effective, and are there any things to avoid because they could damage the hinge material? I look forward to your tips and advice!

Important: WD-40 is not a lubricant but a penetrating oil that temporarily displaces moisture, yet does not provide long-lasting lubrication and can even promote deposits. The use of PTFE or silicone spray is recommended, as these create durable sliding films and do not leave corrosive residues. Before lubricating, the hinges should be thoroughly degreased to remove old dirt and residues. Fat-dissolving cleaners like isopropanol are suitable for this. Don’t forget to tighten the screws afterward. Regular maintenance every 6-12 months extends the lifespan and reliably reduces noise.
I’ll summarize how I personally solve this issue: 1. Remove the door to make working easier. 2. Clean the hinges with isopropanol to remove old dirt and lubricant residues. 3. Use a thin brush to apply silicone or PTFE spray to the moving parts. 4. Check all screws and tighten them if necessary with the appropriate tools. 5. Rehang the door and carefully open and close it several times to distribute the lubricant evenly. Avoid oils like WD-40, as they only provide short-term effect and can attract dirt. If the hinges are heavily rusted, replacing them with a new type of hinge might be a good solution.
