Hello everyone, I have been having an issue for some time with the hinges on my Billy shelf constantly squeaking. The noise is quite annoying, especially when opening and closing the doors frequently. I suspect it might be due to insufficient lubrication or possibly dirt inside the hinges, but I’m not sure. Does anyone have experience with how to reliably and permanently eliminate this squeaking? Which products or methods have proven effective, and are there any things to avoid because they could damage the hinge material? I look forward to your tips and advice!

The noise is quite annoying Oh, really? I think a little squeaking even has some retro charm! ;-) But seriously: WD-40 is often recommended. However, it’s more of a temporary fix because while it stops the squeaking for a while, it can eventually damage the hinges—especially if they are metal. It would also be interesting to know if you’ve tried regular sewing machine oil or silicone spray. I would guess many people don’t realize that squeaking in furniture is often caused by improper maintenance. Sometimes tightening the screws can be the cause—either too tight or too loose—but that’s rarely considered.I like to approach this a bit more technically: BILLY hinges are usually simple clip hinges made of steel with a thin coating, sometimes chrome-plated. To eliminate squeaking, you should first thoroughly clean the hinges. I recommend the following step-by-step process: 1. Remove the door to access the hinges completely. 2. Carefully remove any dirt, dust, and old lubricant residues using a lint-free cloth and some alcohol or nail polish remover. 3. After cleaning, apply a suitable lubricant; silicone-based sprays are ideal because they don’t leave an oily residue that attracts dirt. 4. Avoid oil-based products as they might penetrate the wood and cause stains. 5. Then rehang the door and check the hinges. I also advise checking whether any screws have loosened, as this can also cause noise. One important question for you: Were the hinges originally lubricated (applied at the factory), or have you ever opened the door and re-lubricated them?
Squeaking can be really annoying. I was unsure for a long time about what would provide a lasting solution. One tip that helped me: after cleaning the hinges, try lightly dusting them with talcum powder before lubricating. This often works wonders when the squeaking is caused by friction between plastic or metal parts. Of course, always proceed carefully and don’t apply too much, or the door might stick.
Hello Anzotra, I had the same issue with my IKEA BILLY doors. Here’s what I did: I took the door off and thoroughly cleaned the hinges with rubbing alcohol. Then, instead of WD-40, I applied a small amount of fine sewing machine oil—just a little, otherwise it attracts dust. This is important because WD-40 may help temporarily, but as nanidra already mentioned, it can damage the material over time. If you then polish the hinges with a soft cloth, only a thin lubricating film remains. Since then, no more squeaking. If that sounds too much work, silicone spray is an easy alternative. I hope this helps you 🙂
