Hello everyone,

We are currently building a timber frame house and are in the interior finishing stage.
Our painter has brought us plaster samples. It looks like we will go with a scratch coat plaster...
The finest grain size he has offered us is 1mm (0.04 inches). However, we would prefer an even finer finish. He now says this is not possible.
Has anyone here maybe worked with a finer scratch coat plaster?
Thank you very much for your help.

The painter advised against using roller or brush-applied plaster due to the potential for cracking in new wooden buildings... As far as we’re concerned, the smoother the finish, the better.

You will get cracks one way or another because wood naturally expands and contracts. It doesn’t matter whether the cracks occur in textured plaster or smooth plaster.

I have worked with a lot of textured plaster and am very satisfied with it. It covers well, has a consistent and fine texture, and is easy to apply.

Apply a proper plaster base, let it dry, and then apply the textured plaster. Done. Especially for ceilings, it’s a blessing. A good alternative to wallpaper.

We initially used Knauf Easy Plaster, and later the textured plaster from GIMA. It is a mineral-based, breathable plaster, very white because it contains Carrara dust.
